Nexus 5: Blown away by performance!

Re: Blown away by performance!

That's great news. I hope the rumors aren't true. I believe the Nexus line is extremely valuable.

It is. It is a wonderful concept.... Let's build a phone whose raison d'etre is to show off their latest mobile OS, and sell it at a KILLER price. I mean, one of the knocks on the Nexus is that it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that one might usually find in a 'flagship' phone.... but its an absolute BEAST when it comes to performance.

About the Nexus's 'lack of goodies'.... Think of the Nexus 5 as one of those Scuderia edition Ferraris..... No plushy whizbangs, 25 speaker audio systems, etc... They put into that car only what they need to run like a raped ape down the track. Remember that KitKat was known as 'Project Svelte'.... Google wanted to streamline Android, make it fast, smooth, and more efficient. They want the phone to kind of step back into the shadows and let the OS stand out in the spotlight. And looking at all the reviews, they nailed that goal.... the first thing that most writeups say is "Wow, never has Android felt so smooth and refined as on the Nexus 5"... they often mention the operating system first, then everything else second.

If that was the intention, then they succeeded. It has been a real treat to own the Nexus 5. Especially my second time through. I didn't realize what I had the first time I bought one.

How long had it been since you had it the first time? What made you come back?

I had the first one around November. I had traded my Note 3 for it on Craigslist. Then I got rid of it for the iPhone 5S, which I really liked. But then I saw that the Acer C720 came out and I thought that I could sell my iPhone and buy a Nexus 5 and Chromebook with the money. So that's what I did. I feel like I got away with a scam. I had a little light bleed with the first one and battery life seemed to be an issue. I have an upgrade coming next month so I figured I could get the Nexus 5 and if there were still problems, I could just upgrade to a newer device that was coming out around April like the S5. But I haven't had the battery drain at all. Actually, the battery has been really good. I usually am sitting around 50 percent after a 10 hour workday. That's remarkable for me. No light bleed either.

I gotcha. I have one now. It has some light bleed, so I'm thinking about trading it in, but other than that and a couple of small annoyances, it is a great device. I've still been looking into iOS again, but the price compared to Android products makes me a little scared to spend that much money.

There are some small annoyances with iOS as well. Don't get me wrong, I really liked my iPhone 5S - a lot. But I ran into some small difficulties. One being that you can't use applications simultaneously that require data. I don't think that a lot of people know that this usually is the reason for apps crashing. So for instance, if I have photos saving to Dropbox and I try to stream iTunes, I will usually get a crash of some sort. And speaking of background saving, unless I actually go into the app first, pictures and videos don't start to save. Whereas in Android, they save automatically whether you ever go into Google photos or not. Using Apple Maps was actually a positive experience, I didn't have any issues with it at all. The only problem was that I use Google for search and if I search for an address or business, instead of using Apple Maps when I click on the directions, it prompts me to download Google Maps. The only way around this was to use Yahoo search, but I don't really like their search engine. No downloads folder, I like Google Now better than Siri although Siri isn't bad at all, and the last thing which a lot of people will disagree with me on but here it goes anyway, I like Hangouts better than iMessage. Here are some reasons: every message has a visible timestamp so I don't have to swipe to the side like I do in iMessage, I like how it incorporates Google+, I can video chat with multiple people at a time, I actually see the picture of the person within the thread, and on tablets you can call any number, not just people with iMessage as long as you have a Google Voice number.
