Nexus 5 chimes every time screen is unlocked

I've had my Nexus 5 for a couple months, and all of a sudden within the last day or two it plays a chime every time I unlock my screen, which is VERY annoying. I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing this. I checked my sound settings, and the screen lock sound option is disabled. I also went through all of my running apps to stop the processes, and it doesn't seem to be any of those. It's also not my normal notification sound, it's a different sound I'd never heard before. It's driving me crazy. Any ideas about what it could be or suggestions for troubleshooting this? Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! It must be some 3rd party app. An easy way to tell is to reboot into Safe Mode--if the chime goes away, then it's due to a 3rd party app. The more difficult thing will be to figure out which app is responsible.

Thanks, B.Diddy. So I rebooted into safe mode, and it is still playing the sound. However, it is now a lower-pitched version of the sound it plays when not in safe mode. Very strange.

That's really weird. What does the chime sound like, a bell? Do you have any Accessibility option on?

You could also try clearing the system cache partition: Reset: Google Nexus 5 | T-Mobile Support. Be advised that this process seems to take longer than on most other devices--sometimes upwards of 30 seconds or more.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just cleared the system cache, but no luck. I also checked and don't have any accessibility options on. The sound is kind of like a "do-do-do" ... I wish I could attach a recording!

How about settings>sounds>screen lock> untick check box?

Problem solved! Somehow NFC was turned on. I turned it off, and the sound is gone now. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Merely unlocking the phone while NFC is enabled should not induce the chime; there must be an NFC-chipped card or device within a few centimeters of the phone at the time you are unlocking.

Is your phone in a wallet case which also includes a military ID card, company access card, or some other NFC-chipped card?

I had the same issue. I believe it is linked to the pulse notification light. I turned it off, no more annoying chime!!

Yes! Thank you. Mine was doing the same thing, it was the NFC mode for me as well.

BTW the sound we were hearing sounded to me like the returned message sound in the old AOL instant messenger (around 0:08 on this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxVQ9rhjyTY)
