Nexus 5 is the only Android I can keep for a whole year

Re: Nexus 5 is the only android I can keep for a whole year

I too am hoping to hang on to the Nexus 5 for a while. When I got the G2 I thought the same thing, but eventually will be letting it go once my N5 arrives.

Why do you want the n5 over the g2? Seems like g2 has better battery, camera and bigger screen....

1) Vanilla Android...timely updates.
2) Although the screen on the G2 is big, bright and beautiful, it's a tad too big and wide. N5 seems to be more ergonomic to my needs.

@ ultravisitor, I'm like you. I rocked a cingular pager, then lg flip phone(the silver houndstooth looking one), then went to sony Erickson mp3 flip phone (the gray/black one with the orange screen on the flip and the little green leaf icon thing), then iphone3gs, then motorola atrix, then iphone4/galaxyS then galaxyS3.

This thread is in unacceptable condition; UNACCEPTABLE....

Lol well see... Until the next great Android comes out and you want that

Q10, HTC One, Nexus 7, Moto X

I don't think there will ever be a phone that I can say this about & actually follow through, lol. I'm already looking forward to what Samsung has in store for the Galaxy Series & a high end device from Motorola.

Re: Nexus 5 is the only android I can keep for a whole year

How do you guys afford switching between all those phones? Even if you sell it when you buy a new one, you clearly can't sell it for what you paid for it, so you end up losing some money, even if that's a very small amount. When you add that up over six or seven devices per year, that's a lot of money you're losing. How many phones do you guys go through on average?

I dont get it either. I keep my phones a long while and just bought Nexus 5 and il keep this one a while too. Il be giving my GS3 to my Wife or Son so ill have just the one phone. I can only use one at a time so why keep switching it up? That's just a pain in the neck. I hate wasting money and keep all my devices unless they break down. My desktop is at least 6-7 years old.

I could see a new phone every 12-16 months. I think the specs and features improve so much in that time, that it's hard to stick with something longer than that.

But, if it weren't for the Nexus line and the new cheap pay as you go plans, I'd have to stay with a device for 24 months... That is the tipping point in terms of cost for me.

I had the hankering to buy an expensive flagship phone not long ago...but I bought the LG G Pro instead for $200. The other $400 I had saved I bought a new pistol with. The way I figure a flaghship today is tomorrow's outdated specs. At least the pistol will still shoot and hold it's worth in 5 years; in 15 years maybe I'll give it the my son. The flagship on the other hand will be be polluting some landfill somewhere in 15 years.

I'm looking to make this last until the fall of next year and I think I can stick to that barring a real game changer next spring. Anyone else feel that way?

This is my intention with every phone I purchase and I'm on my 32nd or 33rd phone in 6 years. Smartphones can become very addictive especially when you frequent tech sites and forums like this one. You inevitably become curious about the new gadgets that seem to be released weekly now. It's a little easier if you are an Android purist because you don't have as many options. Recently, I bought the Note 3 and thought that was going to be the phone I kept for a year. Nope. Picked up the Nexus 5 a few weeks later and said the same thing then. Before the Note, it was the iPhone 5S. But obviously I didn't keep that either. I'm the same way with tablets. It's been almost a month with the Nexus 5 and I haven't had the urge to swap yet. However, I have become strangely intrigued with the Moto X of late. It's a sickness really.

I agree. I'm the same way now... Didn't use to be. But I like reading about the new tech, and then I have to have it.

I'm hoping switching to an MVNO (or whatever the letters are) will subsidize a new Nexus every year. At $45 a month for service, it should work...

If the service sucks, I'll have to go back to my $70 unlimited ATT plan and new phone every two...

It is sick. It actually makes me sick that you just bought three phones that just got released in less than two months.

Yeah but you have to remember everyone has their own "thing" that they like to do or spend money on. So while some call it wasting money for others it's an interest or hobby that they spend money on. People with clothes and shoe obsessions easily spend hundreds of dollars each month to get their "fix". For me, a couple hundred bucks every few months to do something that I enjoy, isn't much. To each it's own.

Agreed. In some ways it has become an obsession. I will say that I've really gotten bored with "greatest device" ever every couple months. And that's what happens with these Android devices. So many to choose from and they're all different so you don't want to "miss out" on anything. I didn't get the N5 because I thought it was going to be so much better than every other device. In some ways (specifically hardware) I feel that I have taken a step backwards but I'm surprisingly content right now. We'll see how that goes going forward.

Lol, insane. In the last six years I've had four phones going on my fifth here soon.

The G Pro looks like an awesome phone, and although I like my N5, I've been considering returning it and getting a G Pro. Where did you get the phone at such a great price? Craigslist? EBay?

Little harsh there. As someone else stated it is a hobby for some people and it's what they choose to spend their money on. Some people spend hundreds of dollars on guns or hunting, some on fishing or skiing or rock climbing, that doesn't mean its "sick". Not only that but once you have a device that is fairly up to date, it's very simple to sell what you have and nearly break even on the new device. If you switch often, you never really blow much money in the process. Since May I have had the Note 2, S4, HTC ONE,Moto X and now Nexus 5. I upgraded to the S4 which only cost me 100 bucks with a trade in. After that initial cost, It's very simple to trade, or buy and sell and never really spend any money. I even made a few bucks in some cases. Do some people buy their phones at full retail and have several at the same time? Sure, but many of us that switch often do not. People just assume that they have to be a slave to the carriers and carry the same phone for two years. There is nothing wrong with liking a phone and keeping it until it breaks, but I see far to many people carry a phone they hate just because they think "it's not time to upgrade yet". We are enthusiasts and like trying out different phones. Nothing wrong with that.

Agreed. People spend their money on what they want. I don't understand why my wife needs 100 pair of shoes just like she doesn't understand why I keep changing devices. We just agree to disagree and keep it moving. And you are absolutely right about people that hate their phone but believe they are stuck with it because they cannot upgrade. I've had plenty of friends like that and I just make fun of them (like friends do) but I also understand they never paid $400+ for a device and don't plan on doing so anytime soon. We all have our obsessions and just because it's not something I would do doesn't mean my obession is any better than someone else's.

So I go into sprint to check out the nexus 5. They told me it's 49$ on black Friday and 699$ off contract. Their confused

At that price you can buy two from the play store lmao

I realize that does sound harsh. But it is an obsession that costs needless amounts of money and it's no different than endlessly buying shoes, cars, or anything else that is meant to last. It is called being a junkie. Now if you can break even with every phone you buy if you're buying every month, the more power to you and there's nothing wrong with that, but I seriously doubt anyone can sell a phone for the same amount they bought it for.

All phones do basically the same thing. There is no need to buy the newest flagship that comes out every few weeks. I'm in no position to tell anyone what to do with their money, but I'm standing by what I said in stating it's a sickness. If you have money to blow, why not help out the large majority of the world that live in poverty. Same goes for anyone who has an expensive addiction to anything.

I got mine on Ebay! I had to lurk around for a few weeks but I found one that was in awesome condition, other than a few scratches on the back. As soon as I got it I called AT&T and they unlocked it for me. It really is an awesome phone; the complete package imo. Expandable storage, removable battery, large 1080p screen, IR blaster, 13 mp camera...I could go on and on.
Curious...what makes you want to get rid of the N5?

This post was for Shawn Magm by the way.
