So here's the thing, I'm thinking of going back to android for my phone, and I have a choice to make since I'll have to buy off contract. I think the choices are pretty much down to the 32gb nexus 5 or the 32gb moto x Dev edition.

Now, I hostly thought it was going to be a no brained in favor of the nexus 5. But I'm rather worry the batterylife won't be good enough for my usage. I'm honestly on my phone all the time, mainly for podcasts and audio, but also video and web browsing and apps.

When I had my nexus 4, it struggled to get through the day, and often it would die before the day was done. I even bought a external battery to help that problem. I fear I'll get the same thing from the nexus 5.

So I thought the moto x would be a better choice, since its battery apparently runs circles around the nexus 5. But the unlocked moto x is 150 dollars more than the same storage nexus 5. And its only a 720p screen. And its MAYBE not as fast as the 5's snapdragon 800 Chip.

What do you guys think is the bwtter buy?

I'd say go for the Moto X. The 720P screen isn't noticeable and it isn't washed out like the N5's 1080P display. It doesn't have as much "raw power" as the SD800 but it is optimized VERY well. It has no lag whatsoever and will run just as smooth as the 5 :D
The battery is better due to the "weaker processor" and lower resolution screen so it will probably last you longer. YMMV
Camera is also better than the N5's and the speaker isn't anywhere near as bad :p
Unless you plan on playing graphically intense games like Asphalt 8 or Dead Trigger the Moto X, imo, blows the N5 out of the water :)

Here's the thing: I currently have a iPhone 5S that I just got and am still paying off via att next. I don't know if the nexus 5 would be a downgrade from a tech standpoint.

I'm not even talking android vs iOS, but rather specs and battery.

It would be a downgrade camera wise and in the speaker but I think that the Moto X is better than both. If you have an iPhone 5S you should know that higher specs don't make your phone better. I think the Moto X is the Android equivalent of the iPhone :)

Man, just seems weird to sell the iPhone and get a android phone again. I don't even know how much I could get for my 32gb 5S on eBay. And I still need to pay off the remaining 600 plus dollars I till owe on it. :\

I was looking at the Moto X, but the weak camera was a deal breaker. Probably gonna get Galaxy s4 or LG G2.

Get the G2 run PA or any other AOSP rom on it.
I am sure that you mean to root and rom so you are opting for the bootloader unlocked version right?

I just got my N5 and I loved it
the screen is awesome is a bit dimmer only for the desktop and drawer but in the good way but once you open an app video the brighten is higher fro t moto just go and hold it b4 you buy it.

I'd go to a Sprint store and check them both out to see which you prefer. Sprint is the only brick and mortar where you can try both at the moment.

Oh no not this again, it is NOT weak, the software was the culprit and it's been fixed.

Even after the fix, it isn't as good as the S4 or the G2. It is a good camera now, but not outstanding.

If you can afford the Moto X Dev Edition, that is the way to go. The Nexus 5 is the best phone you can get for $350 off contract. If that is all you can afford, it is a great phone. But if you can afford $500-$600 for an unlocked phone, there are superior devices out there.

I had a iPhone 5S and moved to a Note 3, if the choice between the Nexus and Moto x were given to me.

And gathering the positive and negatives of both devices, I think I would go with the Nexus 5 based strictly on getting the latest and greatest. In the Android community there's lots of phones that come out in a given year, having to wait for certain Android updates thoughout the year.. And going down the spec war within the community. I'd simply choose Nexus 5 because I'm getting the latest specs, although battery and camera is weak in comparison to the Moto X. It's a situation of getting what you pay for, and it being a $349 device is great buy... It's just some aspects had been reduced.

The G2 CAN be better than the X but it's inconsistent, it also doesn't handle white balance properly and it takes forever to focus in lowlight.

First you need to really know how much money your working with. If you want to spend the extra money get the Moto X since it seems like battery is a big aspect of the device for you.

Check eBay and see what people are getting for their iPhone 5S. This will give you a better idea of what you are working with.

He could definitely sell it for more than what the X is worth if it's in good condition :D

I'm not very good at selling on ebay. How can I make sure I get a good price? And is hate to be without a phone while I wait for the 5 to ship .

Anyway, I haven't even fully committed to switching from iOS. I'm still debating. I do own a nexus 7 2013, but I noticed that starting to hitch in a few places.

I'd set the price you want as the "Buy it now option" so if someone wants to buy it they'll go for that and you'll get what you want. I believe you can also have it set so that if it is in bidding, if your minimum isn't met then it won't sell and it will restart the auction.
I'd also include as much content in the box as you can (Manuals, headphones, charger) as well as any accessories you have since you won't be needing them anymore :)
