Nexus 5 or...

Tomorrow I will switch. From iPhone 5 to Android in less than 24 hours. Am a bit scared about this switching, but I need to do it. For working purposes, for convenience (the guy who buys the 5 is paying $500) and because I want to try a different OS. I am quite confident with smartphones, so it does not scare me too much.

I have the chance to buy a brand new Sony Xperia T Bond edition for $300, or go straight to GooglePlay and order a Nexus 5 (as soon as it will be available again).
I know the current KitKat version is not perfect, and I know Google promised to release e new and improved version before Christmas.
What I want you to tell me is which phone I have to choose, and more important, why.

It really depends on what you need.

You want AMOLED, removable battery, expandable storage -->samsung galaxy series
You want "pure google", fast update and low price --> Nexus or Moto
You want best sound --> HTC One series

Not sure where LG fits though.

Its a small phone, 4.3", and screen has a lower resolution (540x960).

I wouldnt recommend that phone... you are going way backward...

Nexus 5 is a good phone.

these are quite vague, and many phones can meet your goal (the fastest update and lowest cost will only be Nexus series, if thats the deciding factor).

You may want to go to a local store and play with all the options.

I used built-in mail app, which handles POP3, IMAP, exchange, you need to first find out what kind of service mail.com offers, then find an app that support it. I heard good words about K-9 mail, but never used it. There are quite a bit options in the google play store, you can try them once you have a device.

I see this so often with people switching from iPhone. They have the latest and greatest iPhone, and then when they switch to Android they get a device that's over a year old and already outdated. Then they aren't pleased with it and go back to iPhone telling everyone that "Android sucks". If you want the best experience with Android, don't go back into last years models. Stick with this years' models like the S4, HTC One, LG G2, Nexus 5, or Moto X.

I think coming from iPhone the Moto X or Nexus 5 would be the best option. Was at breakfast yesterday with three co workers. All iPhone users. They asked me what I was carrying now (since I change up frequently). I showed them my moto x. They were not all that impressed until I left it sitting on the table and used touchless to call one of them at the table. You should have seen their face when their phone rang! One of them said siri could do that and I just laughed.

That is an example of how handy the moto x is!

Get the device that will fit your needs and works for you. If possible, also try and visit your local retailer and get a chance to use the devices and see how you like each one. Regarding KitKat, there's nothing to really worry about. It may have some hiccups here and there, but nothing that inhibits the phone from being a good experience. It will do everything you need and then some.

From your questions, I can feel that you may be completely new to the android system.

Your "standard" isn't that strict, so let me just say that don't worry too much, all leading devices are great, HTC One, Galaxy S4, N3, Nexus 5, LG G2, Moto X. You are very much fine with any choice.

The questions on software and apps can only be answered after you selected the device. Some devices have more functions, others need install apps. There is no blanket suggestion on what app to install.

You should just go to a store and try as many as you can and make a purchase. At this stage, asking about apps is not very helpful.

Primarily for work, then social network and some games. I need productivity apps, some good games and the classic social networks.

I've enjoyed the galaxy series: SG2, SG Note (1) and GS4, I know a lot of folks aren't fond of Touchwiz but I enjoy it. I say SG4, Note 3, but If you're into customization the N5 or SG4-Google edition, but since your coming from IP5 any newer model Android (Vanilla or not) will offer more customization than you're accustomed to. I switched from iPhone 5 to an HTC One originally. It took some time for me to become accustomed to, but once I did I haven't looked back.

I'm now on the Nexus 5 and very pleased so far. I have to say that I very much prefer a pure Google experience.
