Nexus 5: Problems & Issues

Re: Nexus 5 Problems & Issues

On a good day I can push around 7 or 8 hours of screen time. I'm not kidding, it's pretty amazing. Standby is unbeatable

Hmmm... My 4S got 2-3 hours, 4 at best.....

Edit: Screenshot please?

Isn't that 4 hours screen on time? 7 hours off battery (since charge) = 4 hours screen on (and calls?) + 3 hours standby.

The usage accounts for screen on Time under usage. If I was listening to music or something with the screen off it goes under standby (which I barely did). That's 7 hours of screen on time and 3 hours of the phone being in standby for a total of 10 hours

Sorry, but you're not quite right. The definitions from Apple are:

Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. iPhone is awake when you?re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.

Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep.

Based upon these definitions, there is no way with the native iPhone app to determine the actual screen on time.

That doesn't make any sense for the screen shot I took though. Maybe something with ios 7 changed, I don't really know. Those are the numbers I got though.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense, does it? There's 2 iPhones in my house, both running ios7. I'll have to check it out when I return.

Here's my current one for today. I just took it off the charger like 2 minutes ago. I don't know what's up with the statistics. I know the time is wrong, I'm working on the GBA emulator and it requires a time change to install

That would make sense, if I read the definitions correctly. Standby should include total time powered on, including being asleep. In this case, powered on would be the same as awake and in use. Still, it's a confusing way of listing usage stats.

Caveat: I have and use Apple products, Android, and Windows. I'm not heavily biased in any direction, and enjoy them all depending on how I use them. In fact, I'm seriously looking at getting the Surface Pro for my travel computer. :) I'm not the GEICO motorcycle rider, but I work 50-60 hour weeks and some of the OT gets diverted to my technology addiction. 👍

Ios 7 has been crashing a little lately which I've found resets the stats sometimes. For learning purposes, let's ignore that statistic with 7 hours. It's probably not accurate

Re: Nexus 5 Problems & Issues

This is pretty typical, but most people with Nexus 5's get better stats.

You get 6-7 hours of screen on time? Are you rooted? Would love to know what kind of settings and usage patterns you have that allows that much screen on time. I try hard to keep my battery usage as low as possible and the best I've gotten is a hair over 5 hours of screen on time.

Yeah, as a long time iPhone user I can easily say that the settings app is basically useless for figuring out what is draining your battery. One area where Android is clearly superior.

Re: Nexus 5 Problems & Issues

That's really awesome... Are you using dalvik or ART?

I switched to ART but it's only been about a day or two so far. Too soon to tell. That's what I was getting before, though, with screen on. I was getting longer on the battery overall before I put so much data on my phone.

I'm unrooted. I have Google Now on battery saving mode, and so far I'm still only on WiFi which is a major factor. I don't play games on it (unless you count puzzles) and I get less onscreen time if I'm watching videos or movies for a large chunk of it.

So mostly this is listening to podcasts, browsing the net, reading forums, email, beta testing something, and whatever else I may be forgetting.

Ahhh... Okay, thanks! I'm trying to figure out if there if it is worth not having ART to have Xposed Framework...

OK. I'm still not really clear on what Exposed Framework does?

Oh OK, basically it is a 'hub' (that you flash to a rooted phone) where you can download certain modules and alter the phones system settings - i.e., a black theme for settings (rather than gradient), battery percentage inside icon (that you can read), button to close all apps at once from multitasking etc.

Hope you understand, I'm not very good at giving definitions.

Yes, thank you! I do sort of understand. I'm surprised you can't do that with ART but I don't really know about that stuff. :)
