I doubt that's the reason as it will just update as soon as you take it out of the box..

I think the reason is that Google underestimated demand for the N5.. Many want a Nexus just for Lollipop and the N6 is just to big.. I think for many the N5 is the better choice and Google just sold more than they anticipated..
