I just successfully trouble-shot this problem. The behavior described in the post is consistent with a healthy device which has its power button continually pressed. Anyone with a healthy phone can try this out -- power it off, plug it in, and hold down the power button as long as you have the patience to do so.

I'm not saying this can be solved in every case, but basically the power button mechanism is somehow stuck in the pressed state. I realized this and decided I would open it up and see if I could clean it out. By the time I had removed the back, I flipped the phone around and it was back on! Fiddling with it had mechanically (and ultimately electrically) freed up the button, and after that the phone worked fine.

I just got a replacement N5. I put my phone on the charger (it had a low battery) over night and the next day it was dead. There was no power, no life just a black screen. I called LG they referred me to Google. The Google rep said they would look it over and replace it if defective or fix it. Told me to order a replacement phone in case it was not fixable..... WRONG!!!!! They dont fix any phones. Once the orginal phone got to Google I called and an rep said they dont even have parts to fix the phones. He ask me to order a replacement phone or he could reimburst me for the old phone. They will send you a links to ship the old phone and order the new phone. It's a Terrible process basically took me week and half to get the new phone. Ironically the orginal phone was bought in January. Since I got the new phone battery life has been better. Very strange!

Go to Settings>Backup & reset, and make sure you've checked the options to backup your data to Google, and to automatically restore data. When you log in to the new phone with your Google account, a lot of your apps should automatically install, along with their data. The tricky thing is that it's not entirely clear which apps can backup data to your Google account.

I've used Android for many years and I've never seen APP data restored, I have the settings turned on and WIFI etc is restored.

I used to know where (online) you could see what apps were storing data but I've forgotten where that is but out of around 200+ apps from what I remember 3-4 were backing up data.

I had the same thing happen to my phone just now. My phone is 5 months old and I agree with scottgwald. All I did was, shake the phone vigorously and the phone switched back on. I know it's a bit late for this thread but it might help others who are in this situation.

Hello I bought the device in Canada and currently using it in India(using??? not anymore) I have the same problem.. I bought it on March and it stayed alive 3 months. I contacted google play store India they asked me to wait for a week and I haven't got any reply yet. Google play Canada says its impossible to do anything to the phone if the device is out of Canada. Its no way possible for me to go back to Canada :( :'(

hi guys, ive just been through a bad day with my nexus 5. I know its a late post but this is just in case this happens to anyone else.
so I was on my phone and it had less than 5% battery so I put it on charge and a couple of seconds later the screen started jumping and going all multi-coloured static and then went black. so the diagnosis:
1. Hold in both volume buttons and power off button at the same time (don't press one in at a time, all at once) now wait 15 seconds
2. a New screen will appear with the android robot and you'll have a choice to START, LOAD BOOTLOADER, REBOOT and POWER OFF.
3. Choose either power off or start. problem solved. or so I thought, although this should work for most people, it didn't for me. the google logo came up on my screen as if it were to start up and then it went dark as it does before it starts but only the logo came back over and over again
so I decided to hold down both volume buttons and power off, same thing happed the logo came and went over and over again only this time after about 5 minutes my phone fully turned on. so give it time!

Same problem here. Please help. I called Google to see if I can get a replacement but they told me my nexus 5 was already put off warranty. It keeps looping into the Google logo, past nothing else.

Update I got a battery replacement today from Amazon, the vendor is newpower99 and it was $49.95 and it was worth it. I'm now sending this msg from my revived Nexus 5.

do you think they would do the same for me in way of replacing it though I have had mine much longer then you guys have had yours?
