Today I was sitting at my desk with my Nexus 5x plugged in to the charger and I smelled burning rubber. Turns out the end of the charger was smoldering, I quickly disconnected everything and called the Google Store where I bought it. They told me they'd investigate and get back to me with options within 24 hours. I bought the phone in January 2016 and paid for the extra protection. Wow, just Wow

Where exactly is the end of the charger? The cord where it plugs into the charger or somewhere on the charger itself? Keep us updated.

Pictures with a manufacture date and where it was plugged in would be helpful to know.

Guessing that the cause was the cord connection inside the brick had started to detach/fray. If the wire itself starts to get munched up, the internal resistance gets higher and higher or it could start to arc against a nearby component. Good that you caught it.

Stuff like this happens. Nothing is perfect. I'm sure Google will replace your cord or brick free of charge. Any update?
