I'm trying to decide on buying a nexus 5x for $335 (amazon), a moto g 2015 16gig for $199 (best buy on sale) or wait for the new moto g 2016? Any one have experience with both the 5X and the G 2015 phones? Is the 5X worth the extra $ for someone that does very little gaming and more phone calls, texts, some internet, and snapshots?
Thanks Charlie

I had a G3 for a week prior to sending it to my aunt (I set it up for her). I was actually pretty impressed with it. It's a sturdy device (definitely thicker than the 2014 Moto X and with a little heft--which to me is actually kind of reassuring in the age of "thin and oh-so breakable"). I thought the pics were fine, and the performance was fine for basic usage.

I would say that if any of the following matter to you, then spend the extra money for the 5X
  • monthly security updates
  • approx 3 years of OS updates
  • better photo quality
  • lighter device
  • 100% vanilla Android

I'd say go with the 5X. You pay more, but you also get a lot more. First the big three... processor, display and camera... there's a big step between the G and the 5X there.

Now, one thing that the 5X has that blows the G out of the water is support. Google is going to support that phone for quite a while... two years for major OS versions (so you'll get 'N' as well as whatever 'O' will be) and most likely security patches for another year beyond that. And you'll get those updates regularly and without much of a delay. I'm really skeptical of Lenovo at this point... they've been cutting loose most of the Moto team that they brought over and have really walked away from a lot of the direction that made Moto, well, Moto.

My vote would be for the Nexus 5X. I would also recommend the 32 Gigs of memory.

Good luck!

Can I ask what you went for in the end? I have both phones currently and trying to decide which to keep. I love the 5x and the screen is gorgeous but is perhaps a bit big for my taste.

I have not decided yet. I think I'm looking at the Nexus 5X and the Moto X Pure Ed now but I have not decided. I like the moto's extra features but it may be to big. The 5X's size is more my style. Decisions... Any suggestions please

Well... the size thing would be a big differentiator. I picked up a 32G N5X on the Fi deal a bit ago to have the phone as a backup to my 6P (maybe I'll sell it, not sure at this point) and I find it to be quite a capable little phone. Recent updates have really smoothed out the rough edges that existed on launch and now its a nimble little phone. In the time I used it, I was fairly impressed with it and I would have no qualms about recommending it to someone.

Of course, I have not tried a MXPE so I can't say much about it. My reservations with it come solely from my questions about how Lenovo is abusing the Motorola brand... I think it's a shame how they've gutted the Moto team. Most everything that made the Moto line great is no longer with the company... and I fear that the now legacy Moto lineup of phones are going to get cast aside far quicker than they should.

Yes, I think I'd now stay away from Lenovo phones; a shame since I loved my Moto X (2013). They are already showing they aren't giving the timely updates, or for very long, but there is already a class action lawsuit due to Lenovo's horrific customer service.

The moto g is as close to pure stock as the nexus 5X. If camera is important, the 5x is a bit better, but not much. The moto g is a lot cheaper, so if price is a concern, i'd recommend the moto g

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in getting back. Long story short. Lost my flip phone and had to get something so I ordered the Blu LOX and thought that it would make a good back up if nothing else. Got the phone and sim set it all up and no incoming call would ring through, all were going to voice mail? It took 2 days to figure out that the sim card needed to be in slot #2 not #1. Well now calls are ring however, the Blu LOX was dropping calls left and right and this is in the middle of Grand Junction CO. I am totally fed-up with this phone by now and a Nexus 5X is on the way. Got the 5X moved sim card over, set was a breeze and haven’t dropped a call yet. I’m very happy with the 5X so far.
I do thank you for all the time and help you gave to me.
Charlie

If anyone is thinking of taking advantage of the Project Fi deal, the current deal is due to expire on May 8 (this weekend). So be sure to get your phone and Fi SIM ordered this week -- this really is a great deal.

It will be interesting to see if Google does anything towards the end of this week, or after this deal expires. Last month, when the special Fi price was due to expire, they extended the deal for another month. It will be interesting if they extend it again and/or if they extend the $50 off the Nexus 5X through the Google Store, of if they put it back to the $349 price.

Oh, I am sure there will be more discounts, or possibly a permanent price break. Google can get pretty aggressive on pricing... they are not a hardware company nor is the Nexus line's profit margin critical to their success.
