Nexus 5X or Moto G4 Plus?

Trying to decide between these two phones. Can get the G4 Plus for $225 + tax, or the Nexus 5X for $289 including tax. That's a small price difference, and the 5X is much more powerful, but I like the customization options on the Moto and the camera. Opinions?

I'd go with the g4 plus. It's an absolutely excellent phone for the money. I'm sure the Nexus is too, but it doesn't support microSD card, which, if you like to keep media in your phone, is much better than directly in the phone's memory because when you need to do a reset (if you ever do), you won't lose all your data and media.

I plan to test the camera soon. I'm not directly in one of the gorgeous forests around here.

G4 Plus. Or a MXPE for the same price as the 5x. Bought a 5x to replace a 2nd gen Moto X thats no longer supported and has a broken screen. After a week with the 5x i'm back to the 2nd gen moto x and have purchased a MXPE. The motorola has more RAM, better LTE, BT, and Wifi reception, an almost pure android OS and far less "workarounds" or glitches.

Thanks itic. Considering the MXPE as well. Interestingly enough though the 5X beats it in almost all the benchmarks I have seen, despite the same processor in both phones and more RAM in the Moto. But the other points you make are good to know.

slave, thanks for the honest feedback. Good to know. Can you be a bit more specific?

The battery is TERRIBLE. A few fanatics will sing it's praises, but it's N5 bad. Do a google search, or check this forum, it's there. The screen on time is awful. The bluetooth will force a weird wakelock that they can't chase down, so it never doses.

The 2GB of ram really shows, as it lags, constantly. I am on my second phone, as I thought my first was a lemon. My first was fine, by fine, I mean, just as laggy and battery sucks just as bad as the second one.

Run. Fast. I am a Nexus guy, and this is the first time I want to jump ship from Android, over how inexplicably bad this phone is.

Amazingly, I have none of those problems. No lags. I'm quite happy with the battery. My Bluetooth works fine. I use Bluetooth with earphones and a microphone. There are those who sing the praises of the Nexus 5x and there are those who whine incessantly. That's life.

There is always the people who will have no problems. The facts are, they are real, it's wide spread, it is an issue. It's not whining to point out some glaring flaws, your snide remark is an epic fail. Don't worry, Shiller McShilington, Google will be fine, the Pixel will erase the stink that is the Nexus 5X.

Thanks for the heads up slave. I've read so many contradictory reviews that I've gone back and forth numerous times on which phone to get. Wanted to love the 5X because I prefer that screen size, but now I'm pretty set on Moto XPE. At various points I've been leaning to all 4 of the phones I was considering (Moto G4, G4 Plus, etc.).

I also appreciate your perspective, ptkelly. It's maddening how much of a crapshoot devices can be, and if I knew I could have a trouble free 5X experience like you that's where I'd be.

The MXPE is a good phone but if you depend on battery life look elsewhere. Even at low to moderate use it won't last a day without charging, however good thing is it charges quickly. I switched between the MXPE and 5X all the time so I know.

So far my battery is excellent on my g4+. With intermittent moderate use, I can easily get 24 hours if I have to. And then the quick charging fills up the battery in about one hour.

Not doubting your experience but others, including myself, have had a different one. It's good to hear all points of view so others can make intelligent choices.
All devices are different and people's needs are different so it's difficult to give all-out fair advice for someone else.

Given that, with the G4, we're talking Lenovo: I'd go with the 5X. You definitely don't want the Moto X PE if you're on one of the carriers for which Lenovovola's last Android upgrade broke VoLTE. As for the G4s: *shrug* I wouldn't want a phone that big. I have a G3, and my pockets often feel "crowded," already. Besides, like I said: I don't like the directions Lenovo is taking Motorola Mobility.

As for the 5X: Most people seem pleased with theirs, from what I've read. I was thinking of getting one, but, I was waiting to see what the next Nexus' would look like and be priced at. Unfortunately: My old 1st Gen. G started failing before (what turned out to be) the Pixels were announced. I had to have something, so, as a stop-gap, I bought a Moto G3. Now I'm disinclined to spend the money on a 5X. But, were I buying today, and did not have the recently-purchased G3: I'd buy a 5X. It's not ideal. It's more the "least worst" of the available options, IMO.

I have a Droid Maxx 2 and really like it but a couple of things pushed me towards a 5X. I can run Nougat and I get monthly security updates. Plus the fingerprint sensor is super fast and I like that I can use it to unlock apps.

Moto's implementation of Android is good but I am discovering that I really like the "pure" Android experience.

I don't know much about the particular phone you are comparing the 5X with but I am very happy with my 5X.

I agree with a few of your points: updates, fingerprint scanner, and pure N.

See, this is the tricky part, every time I think I've made a decision I get a lot of contradictory advice. Thanks all for the opinions.
