Nexus 6: $649.99

If you are staying with a carrier a contract is the way to go. Why not let them subsidize your phone every 2 years. I have been with att since 1996 and I have no intention of leaving them. I get a 25% discount with my company and have the old unlimited data plan for $70. Having said that I try to avoid bloated up carrier devices if I can and usually sell the ones I get on contract. I also do not make payments for phones.

The Nexus 4 and 5 were darlings of the prepaid plans, but that may be ending with the Nexus 6.
I'm on AT&T and there's no way I'm subsidizing this phone from them. I buy all my stuff used or off contract and save $25/mo per line on my bill (we have 3 lines). If I sign up for 2 years, that's an extra $600 I'm paying to AT&T. So, say it's $200 on contract, I'm paying $800 for the phone, and being locked into contract. Or I can toss it on a 0% interest credit card, pay off a chunk of it with selling my Nexus 5 and pay it off in a few months. And not be locked into forcing myself into two years of an extra $25/mo on my phone bill. The freedom of no contract just feels nice. It's worth the extra money up front (and seems like I'm saving money in the long run). I understand why some people do it, but I just can't do it.

You lost me. The last time I extended my contact I got a Galaxy S4 32GB for like 270. I used it for a while and sold it for like 525 and bought the next big thing probably the Moto X or Nexus 5. My monthly amount did not change a penny. Yes, I extended my contract with ATT for 2 years, but I have been with them since 1996 and do not plan to change carrier.

So not following what you are saying on why you do not use the subsidy. Unless you are talking about making payments on the phone and having that added to your bill. I am not advocating making payments on a phone as I have never done it.

I'm on a family share plan. If you bring your own phone (and have 10gb of shared data or more) your monthly line access is $15 per phone. So for three phones it's $45/month for the line access. If I put one of those phones on contract, that line access automatically goes to $40/month for that line, regardless of how much data I have. So I'd now be paying $70/month for line access on three phones. So by going on contract I'd be out the price of the phone plus an additional $25/month on my bill for 24 months. That's why I won't go on contract just to save a few bucks up front to get charged more on the back end.

I have the same plan. That's why I just buy my phones outright, sell my old one. Basically come out to the price with subsidy or almost that price anyway.

I am going to buy the Nexus 6 but from Motorola and use the financing and free shipping. I have 400 dollars that I set aside for the Nexus 6 so I will have it paid for in three pay periods and keep my $15 per phone. My wife will get my Nexus 5 and I will be upgrading to the 30GB plan on ATT.

My wife has TMO. She got pissed at ATT years ago and went to T mobile. They have great service here in DFW even LTE, but she usually has to borrow my phone at least once when we go on vacations...;)

Yeah I've found T-Mobile is awesome in and around DFW... or well as long as you don't venture too far outside the major metro area.. then it gets spotty... As far as on vacation it just depends on where you go... if you are in a major metro area they are pretty good... but get to any slightly off the main beaten path and you are probably not going to get much if any service.... I tried T-Mobile out when I lived up in Nashville with the Nexus One... Awesome in Nashville but I lived 10 minutes South of town in Murfreesboro and downtown Murfreesboro... Yeah fine.. but in the rural parts it was horrible.... Once you got 15 minutes out of Nashville in any direction you were lost until you came back into a major metro area again...

But hard to beat their plans...... IF you live in an area that has solid coverage...

Sigh, US is likely the few countries still do carrier contracts...and the plan prices here are outrageous.

Try Canada. Worst mobile prices in the world. They admit as much. We're positively lucky by comparison.

Talking about TMobile. I just got back a few weeks ago from Germany, Austria, and Belgium and I had perfect coverage at no extra cost the whole time with my N5 on TMobile. It wasn't fast in some of the smaller towns but I never lost coverage. Same thing last year when I was in Cancun Mexico. Now I just wish they would get LTE where I live (Iowa)

ahh I see. I did not even know they had that program. Thanks for the heads up. My kids are still too young for phones..at least till next year!

Yeah, it's actually what got me to AT&T originally from Verizon. When it was just me and my wife, it saved me around $70/mo over Verizon. It's still saving me money now that we have three phones on the plan. I'm even bumping it up to 30gb since it's on sale right now. And I'll still be paying less than I paid with Verizon for two phones. But I refuse to go on contract with them since it'll lock me in guaranteed for two years, plus I'll be paying AT&T an additional $600 over the life of the contract for each line that I upgraded via contract. Just not worth it to me. I understand why some people do it, but for those of us that frequent these websites don't like to be locked down.

Do you have much experience with Motorola's financing plans? I checked their website, and they mention something about $0 down and zero Interest on all purchases if paid within 6, 12, or 18 months.

I have purchased the MotoX and the Moto 360 both from the Motorola in the past, but never used their financing. This will be the first time but I cannot see any downside.

Motorola financing seems like a good option for people who don't want to spend $650 all at once. I figure most people were expecting the Nexus 6 to cost around $400, so they should already have that much saved already.

Of course, financing would not be a good option for people with poor credit or the inability to make monthly payments on time.

at 0% interest for 6, 12 or 18 months you can't go wrong.... basically free money..... Most installment loans like that have super high interest rates.... so if you don't have $700+ and good enough credit to get approved it's a win win......
