I want to stick with stock 5.0 for now. Was hoping there was a setting I'm missing that could reduce Icon sizes.

How much of a performance hit would Nova cause? Also, should I try the free version first or just buy the $4 option?

The free one works.... You get a decent launcher for free. Only certain stuff is for the paid version but you can try it out on the free version

Apex Launcher is also a great choice. I started using it before I had learned of the excellent Nova reviews, but Apex also turns up in reviews of "Best Launchers". My favorite functions include customizing the number of home screen columns and rows, and gestures. I set swipe up to go to the App drawer, and double tap to bring up a customizable menu (default has about 9 items). I'm using settings, manage apps, and Apex settings, eliminating a lot of Widget clutter.
