Nexus 6 major streaming issues using Wifi.

I am having major streaming issues with WiFi on my Nexus 6. I tried everything from forgetting the network and reconnecting. It is fine but when I stream music it will play fine for a few minutes then start to buffer. This occurs using TuneIn Radio listing to Soma.fm and even on the Soma.fm HTML5 page. Now it is not my connection because I can stream Soma.fm for hours on my computer and it does not buffer at all. It is also not just Soma.fm. RadioTunes buffers badly after only a few minutes if I set the bitrate of the stream to 320kbps. Only setting it to 128kbps it plays fine. I also notice sometimes updating apps it can take 10 minutes to update a 5mb app and no it is not my connection because I can get 60 down and 5 up.

Now to really test it I turn off Wifi to connect to the T-Mobile LTE network and everything streams great no buffering even RadioTunes at 320kbps play fine. I search online for this and all I get is these useless pages saying "Common Nexus 6 Problems & How to Fix Them" and I already tried those useless features. Also if I stream the same services on my Nexus 7 (2013) or Nexus 5 (2013) I also have no issues. I am getting to the point to just leave Wifi off and use the LTE network but the problem is that all the music services I subscribe to include Music freedom except TuneIn and Soma.fm.

Also my tech specs is that I connect to the 5ghz network on channel 36 and my router is the ASUS RT-N66W Router using 374.43 (Merlin) and yes I did try different builds and even reset the router no difference. I also use OpenDNS but I also tried Google DNS no difference. I have even been temped to buy a new router but I don't want to take a chance because it might not fix it and all my other wireless devices have no issues just the Nexus 6.

No good I did all that already also there is no longer a WiFi optimization in Lollipop anymore which causes a lot of issues. I use to turn it off in Kitkat but in Lollipop I can't. I also have to turn off the 2.4ghz on the phone otherwise it keeps connecting to my crappy 2.4ghz network even though I keep forgetting the network. Even changing the SSD of the 2.4ghz network it still connected.

I am ready to root my phone if it means to be able to turn off WiFi optimization which is most likely causing issues. See when the screen is off on battery I have these issues but when it is plugged in it is fine on WiFi.

Changing my 5ghz WiFi network on the Nexus 6 (not my router) to a static IP where I can choose the 192.168.1.xx address and the DNS is using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 helped somewhat. Of course RadioTunes I still can't use the 320kbps streams but that might be a bug in the app as I saw my router data pushing normal data when the app keep pausing and resuming over again which also made the app and phone slow. Had to force close it and wait about five minutes to use it again then it was fine after I set it at 128kbps. As for TuneIn with the static IP it has been better as well so far we will see.

Still crap streaming. It plays fine for a few minutes then slows down. Streaming on my tablet is flawless on the same network.

On my phone I will have to stream on LTE and for TuneIn and SomaFM I will have to use my tablet.

Great phone with crappy wifi antenna should have stuck with the Nexus 5 which was also flawless in streaming.

Okay I am not losing my mind. Google search gave me chit as usual but I went and disabled the Google Connectivity Service and rebooted. Still slow WiFi when the screen is off for a few minutes.

I then reinstalled it and read some of the helpful reviews on the Google Connectivity Service page well you know that they are having the same issues with T-Mobile when they added 5.1.1 with there crappy wifi calling. Before that with 5.1 it was fine. The thing is when I got this phone I upgraded to 5.1.1 not knowing this so the issues started day one. Also BTW WiFi calling is disabled on my phone after I tried it a while and a important call was missed because the phone never rang.

Well I searched again on Google for Nexus 6 5.1.1 T-Mobile wifi slow and got chit again just stupid 10 Common Nexus 6 issues and blah blah blah. At least I know it is not me

BTW I am streaming Uptempo smooth jazz on LTE at 320kbps on my Nexus 6 for about 20 minutes now not one buffer.

Also if I forget can I downgrade this pos 5.1.1 and put 5.1 even if it means rooting and if so how?

Okay since no one is having any issues and I am the only one here COME ON!! When the phone slowed down steaming music I ran a speed test and my ping was over 1800ms and speeds were abysmal only 0.1MB down and up. I then immediately ran the same speedtest on my tablet and my speeds were 59MB down and 6MB up. After a few minutes I ran the speedtest on my phone again and my speeds were back the same at 59MB down and about 6MB up.

Now I am ticked no reply's. What am I making this crap up.

Second attachment when it slowed down after the music app buffered it showed a download speed of 0.1mb then shot up to my normal speed.


The one with the over 1800ms ping same thing after the speeds picked up.

I did get the useless software update which fixed crap as usually. Common problems they ignore but stagefright whatever and other useless security junk they patch even though there are no know cases of someones phone being taken over by a hacker.

I also changed channels, tried signal bonding and even replaced the stock middle antenna. No difference.
I will be getting tomorrow from Amazon the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router to see if it makes a difference because I am out of options.

My wife and I both have Nexus 6's and regularly get 250-300Mpbs up and down on WiFi. So the Nexus 6 is certainly capable enough. Stop blaming the phone. It is NOT the problem. Somehow, it's the router.

Forget rooting. That's not gonna help.
Forget downgrading from 5.1.1. That's not gonna help. 5.1.1 is the best version yet anyway.
Make sure you have the latest OS buil for T-Mobile. You should have LYZ28K.

Try these steps, in order, until it (hopefully) works. They are some of the most common fixes for stubborn WiFi connections and have been successful in many cases. Do 1-5 together (humor me on this), 6-10 one at a time:

1. Go to: Settings > WiFi > Long-press on your network > Forget network.
2. Turn off the phone.
3. Unplug the power to the router for at least 30 seconds.
4. Plug in the router and give it plenty of time to fully reboot, at least 3-4 minutes.
5. Turn on the phone and try to connect.
6. Open a browser and get into Setup in the router.
7. Set security encryption to WPA2/AES. Do not use TKIP or AES/TKIP.
8. Try setting static IP addresses.
9. Try using Google's DNS servers. 8.8.8.8 for the primary, 8.8.4.4 for the secondary.
10. Update your router firmware.

If none of these help and the problem is only with this network, it's possible you have a signal interference problem. You need to determine the best setup for your situation and configure the router and phone accordingly. To find the best setup try using WiFi Overview 360 or WiFi Analyzer. The free versions are probably all you need but the Pro versions are cheap.

On dual band routers give the 5GHz and 2.4 GHz bands different SSID names for easy identification. When setting up the 5GHz band usually it's best to set the router to use a channel well over 100. Over 150 if there's a clear channel. For 2.4 GHz use whatever is best, usually around channel 11. For both bands of course use channels with the least interference and best signal as indicated by AiFi Analyzer or WiFi Overview 360.

Did all that nothing. What works is if I keep the phone plugged in then the music does not buffer. I tried with my battery pack and it worked fine. I still think it is the Wifi going to a low power state when the screen is off and not plugged in. There is no option to turn this off and I looked at every confusing option possible.

That is it I am selling this crappy phone. Even plugged in it buffers and slows down.
What I newly tried and did not work.
Changed WPA2 to Auto Personal to use TKP. Did not work.
Disable WMM ASPD. Did not work. I am done I tried everything.
So I am stuck with cruddy 128kbps streams on Wifi or I have to use LTE.

If the new router does this then I am going to have to go back to my reliable Nexus 5. I think the Wifi antenna actually might be defective in the Nexus 6.

According to your link I am trying it with encryption off too see if it is the router. I hate doing this and I hope nowhere gets into my router I am nervous but desperate. Then I think the Nexus 6 Wifi is defective. Can't return it except to Motorola but I have no choice. Reliable Wifi is very important to me and if the new router does the same thing then I will have to RMA the Nexus 6.

Streaming for 20 minutes with encryption off no buffering or slowdowns. Of course I am going to turn it back even if it means using LTE. But encryption is messing up the Nexus 6. My router is only N and the Nexus 6 uses AC so I might have better luck with the Netgear which has the latest AC standards.

Anyway thanks for your patence. Sorry I got nasty but I hate it when I have this problems and I can find little to no solutions online.

A few things:
I did not say to change encryption from WPA2 to TKIP. I said to change TO WPA2 and NOT to use TKIP.
I did not say to turn off encryption, though it was good as a test. I would never say to run WiFi unencrypted as normal practice.
The Nexus 6 will run happily on a router with 'n' or 'ac'. An 'n' router is much slower but way fast enough for streaming music.
I seriously doubt the Nexus 6 has defective WiFi. As I said before, stop blaming the phone, there's something iffy about the router setup.

You did everything on the 10-point list? Updated the router firmware, etc?
And you downloaded an analyzer to check out your network? What did the analyzer find?
Get your network in order before blaming the phone and returning it.

BTW, does the Nexus 6 have problems with other WiFi networks?

Got the new Netgear router so far I am streaming at 320kbps for about a hour no buffering. The phone now connects to ac and it is faster now too.

The wired part was on the Netgear I had to use a higher channel channel 154. When I tried a lower channel the range was cut in half. It did give me a warning. My Asus I had to use a lower channel channel 36 as the higher channels were weaker of course I was using a old folk of Merlin firmware any version after cut the range.

Anyway glad for my patience. I am glad there is nothing wrong with the phone. As for the Netgear firmware I am leaving it stock as I had bad experiences with DD-WRT with my old single band Netgear router. I will however miss the great advanced features of network traffic monitor and other advanced features but stable WiFi is more important.

On the 5GHz band it's always best to use a channel over 150 if possible.
If you haven't assigned 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands different SSID names, do it.
All that cussin' at the Nexus 6, callin' it crappy, threatening to send it back and stuff...outta be sorry you said that stuff now. :^) The Nexus 6 is terrific phone! Hate to say it but...I told ya it was the router...

The weird thing is that the router was fine on all my other wireless devices but it hated the Nexus 6 for some reason. Anyway I feel relieved there is nothing wrong with the Wifi antenna.
As you said yes 2.4ghz and 5ghz have different SSID's however I never use 2.4ghz anyway just there for legacy devices. Also I am using channel 161 as with the new router it is showing more 5ghz networks and 161 there is nothing on there. The other channels there are weak networks but 161 gives me the longest distance. In my bathroom which is the weakest stop I was limited to 1 to 2 bars on my Asus I now get 2 to 3 bars at full speed.
