Nexus 6P and Verizon WiFi calling

Has anyone heard anything new on this. My 6P is my primary business phone. I often find myself in places where Vzw has a poor signal but I do have access to WiFi. It would be great if this would work. Anyone know anything?

So, as of now, it can't be done officially. By there's a Google app called Hangouts Dialer that offers free VoIP, and you can set it so that it shows your Verizon phone number in the caller ID.

I went to try the Messages+ app for WiFi calling but the problem with that was it would only run if you made it the default messaging app. I won't deal with apps like that.

According to someone I was talking to in the comments section on DroidLife, a Verizon Rep on Twitter said the new unlocked Galaxy S7 will have both VoLTE AND WiFi calling. Now if that device, being unlocked for all domestic carrier can do it, there's no reason it wouldn't work on the 6p. Friggin Verizon!!!

But maybe I'll check out the Hangouts dialer app in the meantime until Verizon pulls their head from their you know where.

That works for OUTGOING calls, not incoming though.

I've now heard contradicting info, I listened to the AC Podcast this AM and it was mentioned that it likely WOULDN'T be supported for WiFi calling on Verizon and AT&T. Maybe it was during Phil's "unboxing" live stream on FB yesterday. The theory is because Verizon isn't approving the software for the device there's a good shot it won't have support for WiFi calling even though it's nearly identical to the Verizon-branded device.

Since I last posted , a commenter on Droid Life said a Verizon Rep on Twitter stated that the unlocked Galaxy S7 would support both Advance Calling and WiFi calling. Another commenter said he was told by both Verizon and Best Buy the same when he was buying a new S7. If that's the case, there's no reason they can't make WiFi calling (and Advance Calling for that matter) work on the Nexus 6p. That only leaves that they don't want to make it available on there, which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

On Verizon branded phones, you have to enable Advance Calling on your account and on the device itself for Advance Calling to work. From what I've read, AC is a combination of VoLTE and HD voice. The 6p is capable of VoLTE but we don't get the HD voice part of AC because that requires the feature to be installed on it. My Verizon shows my phone as Huawei and the model number, but it doesn't say name of the device like Huawei Nexus 6p and the model number like it would with a Verizon branded device. I haven't tried this out on my Turbo 2, but I also believe we don't have the ability to do Video calling on the 6p either, which is part of AC. So you can enable AC on your account, but without it on the device you won't have access to all of the features of AC.

Some people can still have the ability to do WiFi calling, like those on T-Mobile, but on carriers like Verizon and AT&T, IIRC they have to be a carrier branded device. I seem to recall reading that either the Nexus 5x, 6p, and the Moto X Pure don't have the ability since they are unlocked devices. And since the only carriers I have access to are Verizon and AT&T, my only options are third party apps or using Messaging+ on Verizon. But since Messages+ won't allow it to run on my device without making it the default messaging app, that's a no go for me. Maybe once unlocked devices become more of the norm well see this issue go away, but for the time being, Verizon will most likely not address the issue. Just Verizon being Verizon.

The Verizon messaging app does not allow wireless calling on the 6P

I have the first Droid Turbo which has AC, HD and Video calling. It's a Verizon only flagship device. I don't know why it doesn't have WiFi calling available but it's another reason why I'll go with the new Nexus phone when it comes out. It really doesn't make sense when a company like Verizon won't treat their own flagship phones like actual flagship phones and it makes more sense to go with flexibility of a Nexus phone.

Yeah that's not a flagship phone and no Verizon phones had WiFi calling when your dinosaur came out. The galaxy s7 has it and so does the new z force. Kidding on the dinosaur, but these days it's almost antiquated at two years.

It most certainly is a flagship phone, it's just that Verizon hasn't treated it like one which confuses people.

Never said it did but why a flagship phone with AC, HD and Video calling capability couldn't? I don't even think they enabled the Turbo 2 to make WiFi Calls.

Although the Z Force may be able to, Verizon does not list the Z Force as a phone with WiFi Calling on their website. I can also guarantee it won't get updates or the latest versions of Android anytime soon. Verizon has a history of forgetting about a phone once it's launched. I would never get a Moto Z because you can bet with new and unproven technology like that, there will be major issues needing a fix. Good luck getting a timely update from Verizon to deal with any issues.

My point is after experiencing the constraints, issues, finger pointing and lack of support of a flagship phone from Verizon, the Nexus will be a breath of fresh air.

Not a flagship anymore. Verizon will probably only enable WiFi calling on models going forward. Why would they spend time on a two year old phone when they sold few and even fewer are still in use?

As for updates, i don't blame Verizon these days. My Galaxy s7 gets every monthly update and so does the Priv.
