First of all, I’m not a blogger so forgive me for my poor sentence structure and misspellings but I figured that I would contribute to the forum and provide you with my musings and ramblings on my Nexus 6p.

I have a Note 3 that is still in good working shape but I had to constantly enter my password (because of work Exchange requirements). Therefore, I wanted a phone with a fingerprint reader so I wouldn’t have to enter it a 1000 times a day. I finally decided to pull the trigger on a Nexus 6p 64 GB and of course they were sold out. I ended up placing an order for the 32 GB.

My nexus 6p aluminum 32GB was scheduled to ship Nov 18-22 and I received it Oct 27th. Once I received a message that my Nexus was being shipped, the next day I received an email for the $50 gift certificate.

In the meantime, I called Verizon customer service and asked for a Nano-sim. I received BOTH my phone and the sim card on the same day. However, Verizon had FedEx’d me a micro sim. I called customer service again and the nice lady was very confused over what to send me, at one time she was planning on sending me 3 sim cards, I told her to send me the sim that fits the iphone 6s…. Its scheduled to arrive next week.

I have to say that I felt like a giggly small kid in anticipation of receiving my new shiny nexus toy. Here are my musings.

#1. I have always covered all of my phones/tablets with Otterbox. I was disappointed I couldn’t order an Otterbox for this phone! (However, not a deal breaker) I did place an order for a Supcase Unicorn Beetle. Its not scheduled to be available until after Nov 16th. With that said. This phone is very light and sleek. I am used to the rubberized feeling on the back of my Otterbox covered Note 3. I feel like it wants to slip out of my hands (it doesn’t). I’m STILL planning on switching from my Note 3 as soon as I can get a nano-sim in it. I’m just hoping I don’t do too much damage to it (by dropping it) until I get it covered with a case in 2-3 weeks.

#2. Bend gate videos. Don’t care. I either will put my phone in my left pocket or my shirt pocket (until I receive my case/holster). I would think if you put the phones in your back pocket and sit down on your phone then you would be at risk of bending it. Heck, that’s why I purchased Nexus Protect. If for some reasons they won’t pay for it then I will just go back to my Note 3.

#3. Android Marshmallow. My current Note 3 is running android 5.0. At times, I feel like I am trying to go back and forth between Windows and Mac OS. They both do the same thing but you gotta find the correct location and/or way to do it.

For example, In my Note 3, I can set which screen is my Default Home Screen. I have 5 screens with my “Home Screen” set in the center. Work to the left. Play to the right. It took me several hours to find out that the home screen is always set to the #2 position so that you can swipe left to get to Google Now. (If I’m wrong someone please tell me how to change this)

I use Outlook at work and it won’t let me import my contacts into my phone. Evidently this is a known problem and a software fix will be forthcoming.

My note 3, on the dropdown menu, I have: airplane mode, Wifi, location, Sound, and Mobile Data as my “5” choices. The top 2 choices for Marshmallow are Wifi and Bluetooth. I want to be able to move Bluetooth-since I never use it. I have the System UI Tuner Enabled, but when I go to quick setting to rearrange them, it skews up the look. Its almost as if you HAVE to always have wif and Bluetooth together at the top. I never use blue tooth but I use airplane mode daily (since I work in the basement and have no cell signal at work).

Battery life has been pretty good so far, I have been tinkering with my screens and Marshmallow (non-stop) to get everything just right for when I get my nano sim card.

The fingerprint sensor is phenomenal. THIS is the reason that I bought this phone and its great. Its very quick and responsive. The location of the sensor in the center of the back takes some getting used to (for me). When I hold the phone in my left hand, my index finger rests on the back upper left of the phone just underneath the camera. I have to slide my finger over to activate the sensor. I end up sliding my finger in a clock wise or a counter clock wise manner to find the sensor. It takes a micro-second for my finger to slide over to find the sensor and I have to say I really like the placement on the back. I played with an iPhone in a store. I would pick up the iPhone in my left hand, use my right hand index finger to tap the unlock button, then scroll to an app. With the placement on the back of the phone, I eliminate a step by using my left hand index finger to activate then I use my left thumb to scroll to an app then use my right hand to tap. Long story short, it works for me!

I was looking forward to Android Pay BUT it doesn’t work with my bank account. Because I can’t put in a credit card, it won’t let me put in my loyalty cards. Everything online says click the plus at the bottom right of the screen and it will THEN let you put in your loyalty cards. NOPE. Aint gonna happen UNLESS you put in an approved credit card first. Not a deal breaker for me. I really wanted to use this but that’s ok. I’m NOT going to switch banking just so I can use android pay.

Oh yea, the other reason that I wanted to get a Nexus phone is because of texting. Typically, every day I walk out to my car, cut off airplane mode (again, work in the basement-dead cell zone), I don’t get good cell service until ~1 mile from work at the stop light. I enter in my passcode and the light turns green-I shut the phone off and put it down. I go the next stop light and come to a complete stop, enter in my passcode and then the light turns green again and I have to put my phone down. I wanted a phone that I could use my finger to open it up, say “ok google” text message wife… It appears that this phone easily does this around the house. I’m constantly going Ok google, set alarm. Ok google, text message my son (while he’s sitting beside me) to pick up his dirty clothes from the floor. (It doesn’t send because I don’t have service BUT it does everything quick up until the sending part.)

The speakers are LOUD! When I say LOUD, they are LOUD!

I had a slight problem transferring my ringtones from my old phone to my new phone. I use a Mac Air (my work computer). I downloaded Android File Transfer but I couldn’t get the darn files to transfer. Again Windows vs Mac Os, had to Google to find out what I was doing wrong, once you plug in the 6 inch usb a to c (its too dang short btw), you pull down the drop down menu, click on the notification “USB for charging Touch for more options”, click on the 3rd option “file transfers” to allow.

I like the double tap power button to access the camera. The camera seems ok. (I'm not much of a picture taker...)

Ok, enough rambling. Cheers.

Here are some screen shots of the Widgets on my phone

Welcome to the forums. Here is an idea to reduce slipping: Go to a local Bowling pro shop, and ask for some bowler's tape. It should be pretty cheap...like 2 or 3 dollars. The tape should be really easy to remove, and is quite rough...giving you maybe the extra grip you need.

I am curious about both these topics. I have my current phone set up much the way you mention, with my default home screen "in the middle" of 5 different screens. I also have my phone set to "loop" the screens so that I can just flip through them all without ever needing to go back to a previous screen; I can just continue flipping to get back to the beginning. I would hope this is possible with Marshmallow, as well

I also use Outlook for work, including email, calendar and contacts. I was unaware there was an issue with this. I will need to look into this further.

I'd appreciate hearing thoughts on both these topics from anyone who already has their 6P and/or is running Marshmallow on another device.

Regarding the home screen, this has nothing to do with Marshmallow, but more about the Google Now launcher which is the default launcher on the 6p. The Google Now launcher always has the 2nd page of the home screen as the default home screen and will not do continuous scrolling. However, using another launcher, like Nova Launcher, will allow you to set your home screen to be any screen in addition to allowing continuous scrolling. Still waiting on my 6p but I have Nova Launcher on other phones (including the Nexus 5 running Marshmallow) and this works fine.

Thank you for this information. I've been looking forward to stock Android for so long, it never occurred to me to look into issues like this. This is absolutely unacceptable to me, and I can't for the life of me imagine why Google would think this was a good idea, when you merely have to long press the home button to launch Google Now. I was considering trying Nova Launcher with this new phone, and I guess this has made the decision for me. Thanks again for the information.
