I have used a wireless charging pad for my tablet for the past year or longer. The tablet stays on the charging pad until I need to use it, and it goes back on after I use it. I noticed I had not heard any notifications for a few days. I check the device, and it was powered down, but still on the wireless charging pad. I used my original charging cable, and the device came alive. The tablet only stays on when it is plugged in. When I unplug it to, and click on a few apps it just shuts down with no warning. I called Asus, and they said that the board may need to be replaced. They want $200, no way. What do you suggest I do to troubleshoot the device? I have already reset the device, but no change. I am not paying to get it repaired. I just hope Google comes out with another Nexus tablet because this was my favorite.

So it powers on and then randomly turns off? And survives a factory reset. That means it's probably hardware. I opened up the back on mine a couple weeks ago, unplugged the battery from the board and reseated the gold ribbon that goes down the center. Takes about 5 minutes and has a good chance of helping if you feel comfortable doing that. It's pretty easy to do, definitely not worth $200.

It sounds more like a bad battery to me, if it won't stay on long without being plugged in.

I'd agree with the battery as the culprit - sounds like it's shot.

I haven't looked at replacement cost for the battery, but if it's anywhere close to $100 you'd be better off investing that in a brand new nVidia Shield K1 - at $199 it's the top performer in the price range.

The battery is fully charged. There is no issue with the battery. It just will not stay powered on.

Photo is not mine; I just added circles.

If you're comfy working under the hood: Red circle is the battery connection to the board. It pries straight up. The purple circle is the ribbon I mentioned. On mine, under the tape in the purple circle, the connection was loose. Lifting the tape, re-seating that ribbon connection might fix the issue, but disconnect the battery wire first and then remember to re-seat it as well.

If you leave the tablet plugged in will it operate normally as long as it's connected? If so, that's a classic symptom of a battery that's lost its ability to hold a charge, regardless of what it reports about the charge level.

Guess you'll find out when you open it up.

Could your sleep setting have gone miss set?

Go to settings > Display > Sleep and see if it's set too low.

Okay I removed it from the case, and removed the connectors from above, and reconnected everything back. I suppose it's either a bad battery or motherboard (according to Asus). The tablet still boots up, and shuts down shortly after. I am also thinking that maybe I killed the battery by charging it all the time on the wireless charging pad. Well this was my favorite tablet (I also have the Nexus 2012). I hope Google has another Nexus tablet sometime in the near future. Thanks everyone for all of your help:D
