Nexus 7 first generation wired Ethernet troubles

So I bought the Ethernet and USB adapters linked below and I've been having issues. I was lead to believe that it would be a plug and play affair but instead I have had no such luck. Nothing I try can get it working, from turning off Wi-Fi or keeping it on to changing the order I plug adapters in. Can anyone offer any advice? Much thanks.

I don't have an answer, but I'm just curious--why Ethernet, and not wi-fi?
