Nexus 7 Glass Seperation

Yeah, mine has the separation too, but since it is minor I think I can live with it... I bought mine from the Play Store, does anyone know how much time do we have to return it in case it gets worse?

On second thought I realized I too had the glass issue. Bought from staples originally, so now I ordered a new one from Google and when it gets here the original one will get returned at staples. Bummer but at least I won't be without I guess. I almost kept it anyway but my conscious is telling me to get a fresh one without defects. If the second one from Google is a flop then I can exchange it again for a 3rd attempt (but hopefully not)!

Check the Google page for all that info...pretty sure its 15 days after u receive it directly from Google and then Asus takes it after that

Anybody else having issues with theirs? Making me nervous already and I dont even have mine.

No issues with mine. Fit and finish seem pretty tight. Just got my rubber case today so if it does happen I probably won't notice till I make this case off. The case is really tight though.

Here is what happened with mine.

When i got it the first thing i've checked was to see if i have the raised screen issue and looking along the silver trim i have noticed that the screen is raised not even a half a millimetre but i have noticed that the silver band -trim is dented on that left side where people are reporting this issue.

I have opened the back and noticed-suprise,suprise - that there are are fingerprints on the coper plates.
I have tried to tighten the screws but they were already tight enough to the maximum.

DId i get a refurbished tablet for the price of a new one considering that i have found fingerprints inside and the silver metal trim is slightly dentend on the left hand side?

I just find this very strange.

I would return it. You paid for a factory-new unit, not a refurbished one! Someone sent you the wrong unit in error.

With visible fingerprints and a dent, you probably got one that someone clumsily tried to fix themselves before returning it. Exchange it. You paid for new, you should get new.

I wonder what's going to happen in a month or so when ASUS has a pile of Nexus 7s with glass separation issues, though? I'd love to pick up an extra on the cheap even if it meant putting it in a tight case to hold it together. Heck, we're getting ready for a kitchen remodel - I could take one apart and build it into the wall.

Mine has a slight separation and the frame isnt straight on that side starting about the middle. However, everything else works great and it doesnt seem to be getting worse. I'm afraid that I would risk getting a more defective one at this point if I returned it...

Thats wierd because the very first one I got had a finger print on the inside of it. As of now I am waiting on an email to return my second and get a third.

The tablet was working fine and had no issues whatsoever apart from the ones mentioned above.
But having said that i was just tired of all this BS from google and ASUS and the very high risk of getting another faulty one if returned.
Anyway, i decided to return it and i did.

And now i dont know what to do.I can wait for a few more weeks until the present stock dissapears and google gets on top of all this crap or just not buy another one and wait for ipad mini, if there will ever be one..

I bought my unit yesterday (7/30) at a local retailer Brandsmart, and honestly, I would have never noticed this problem if it hadn't been mentioned. Maybe my unit doesn't have the problem that badly and it wouldn't have really bothered me until I realize it's a defect/quality control issue.

I do notice a slight give on the left side as well as the glass being ever so slightly taller, but at this point, I don't want to torture myself with the whole return procedure for something I would have never even noticed had I not read these threads. I suppose if the problem was more severe to the point where I DO notice it, but I think I'm just going to keep mine. My screen has no issues so why risk getting a worse unit. Then again, I did get my unit way later than most people who ordered weeks ago so maybe it is a different batch.

Only thing that bothers me about the Nexus 7 is how low the volume is, but even that is minor.

I took my unit apart to take a closer look. I think the problem is most likely one of two things. I would put my money on a poorly injection molded sliver frame/bezel/surround that was bent from the beginning during the injection process or something bent it under pressure while in the bin waiting for assembly. Alternatively, maybe during assembly something (e.g. excess bit of plastic flash) got wedged in between the glass and the top side of the frame (which you cannot see when just popping the back off). Then when the screws were tightened from the other side the excess plastic acts like a thickening shim and bent the plastic down at that point. Either way, the frame/bezel/surround is permanently bent. When I loosened the screws in that area the glass went down flush at the corner but there was still a bend toward the middle of the sides. When I re-tightened the screws, the bezel rose up again. I am not willing to chance things to try separating the glass and the bezel.

If the glass issue was very minor, I might let it go. In my case, the unit really pops if you put pressure on the end of the tablet anywhere from the camera over to the power button. It is seriously annoying.

My unit also has corrosion in the shape of fingerprints on the large flat copper pieces. At first I wondered if I did it but that would have corroded super fast! Then I was able to see down inside a square opening in one of the circuit boards to see fingerprints on another copper piece. I couldn't have touched that piece if I wanted to so that confirms that it was all due to sloppy workmanship at the factory.

I received a replacement unit and as soon as I opened it I can see the glass above the bezel on both sides. Pushing together as seemed to fix the right side but eventually the screen comes back up on the left. Very frustrating. Just wondering if I should just buy a case and deal with it or return it again. :-\ Maybe I should just accept the fact that I paid $250 for a tablet and you get what you pay for?
By the way I never did open my units up. I read people think the screw trick really doesn't work anyway.

Pondering what to do.........

Just out of curiosity, what does your new replacement's serial number start with? C60? C70?

I tried to do everything fix mine. I tightened the screws, I clamped the thing down while putting a movie on to heat up the glue. I even tried reglueing. Everything became undone shortly after and the stupid thing would creak again.

The best trick that I did was to shim the tablet with small thin plastic that was used in the blister pill carriers. It seems to hold the screen pretty solid for a month so far.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my nexus was replaced by gamestop. Had to wait almost 5 weeks for them to get one back in stock though. No issues with the new unit. Its flawless!
