Nexus 7 internet connection drops frequently

Hello guys

I bought Nexus 7 (2012 Wi-Fi only model) a couple of weeks back. I had the option to update the OS to 4.3 and I did so soon after. Haven't rooted the device.

I have been experiencing issue with Nexus connecting to my broadband internet connection. Connection keeps dropping every now and then. I get the "connection timed out" error message. The wifi indicator at the top remains in blue color and sometimes goes to grey. I'm guessing the black symbol over the blue wifi signal indicator represents the data transfer. That symbol keeps toggling.

The Wi-Fi signal strength is strong and I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. My other devices, dell laptop and iPod Touch work fine with the same connection. I tried Internet sharing on my phone which has a 3G connection and connected my Nexus to that wifi hotspot, and it works fine! The problem is when I connect to my broadband connection.

I have done my part of searching on this topic and have tried some things like, the Wifi Fixer app, meddling with the modem settings like with the IP address, DNS; nothing helped.

Any suggestion/help would be appreciated.

Sorry if this is pretty basic, but have you rebooted your router since the 4.3 update? Also try forgetting the router settings on the tablet, then re-connecting.

I've read some posts where people describe NFC interfering with wifi. Try turning NFC off and see what happens.

Tried switching channels on your router? If there's a lot of traffic on the channel it's using, there might be dropouts. (Fully expecting, "Yup, done that too!":p)

Haha :D No, not this time. I have noticed this problem even when my Nexus is the only device using the router. So I doubt if that can be the issue. I'l give that a try anyways.

Do you use bluetooth at all? BT and wifi can interfere. Again, switching channels on your router can help though in my experience, you may have to try them one by one until you find one that works well.

@mr_nobody No, I dont use Bluetooth. Both Bluetooth, NFC are turned off. My router channel was set to "Auto Scan" and I changed it to channel 11 as I had read that's the best option, but it din make any difference.

I would like to add, the connection drops every few seconds! The internet connection is not that bad and the device too works fine with other wifi. So it definitely got to be some configuration problem which I'm not able to figure out :(

Tried disabling security on your router, just temporarily? Or changing from dynamic to static IP?

Do you have another router lying around that you can swap your current one with?

@B. Diddy Yes, tried disabling the security and the dynamic - static IP. Still the same! I do not have another router, but I can create a Wifi hotspot using my cell phone which has a 3G connection. The wifi hotspot has a WPA2 security and DHCP. As I had mentioned Nexus works fine with that connection. The 3G connection is not very consistent in my place, hence cannot stick to that all the time. Or else I would have used that and not bother u guys :D

Sounds like the n7 simply does not get along with your router. It happens. What kind of router/how old is it? Unfortunately, the solution may be a new router. Have you tried using your n7 on public wifi somewhere to see how it behaves there? That would tell you if the n7 is the issue or not.

My Nexus is at Asus right at this very moment because of this issue. I had occasional connectivity issues and then it just crapped out on me a few weeks ago. I did all the usual things (rebooted the Nexus, deleted and reestablished the wifi connection, rebooted the router, and finally reset to factory settings) before I called CS. CS had me do it all again (I understand, but still annoying) and then had me do something like a hard factory reset which completely fried the tablet. I was STEAMED. So for the second time this year -- first was a charging port malfunction -- it's being repaired. Which reminds me...I should check the status.

I'm so unimpressed right now. Like I said before, my tablet suddenly wouldn't connect to our WiFi and then the CS rep fried it and it wouldn't even turn on. So I sent it back on 8/16 and it was delivered on 8/20. They didn't "receive" it to fix until 8-freaking-26. It took until 9/3 to fix and it was finally sent out and I'm not scheduled to get it back until 9/9. This is the second time it's had to be repaired since we got it at Christmas.

I was having a lot of problems with the wi fi dropping. But I found that if I turned off the "BLUETOOTH" , I never had a problem. Granted I found this out accidentally ....but continued to try it on and off....and found that with the BLUETOOTH off, I never have a problem....Go Figure!!!!!
