Nexus 7 MTP problem

When I first got my Nexus 7 last fall I had no problems connection to my Windows 7 pc with MTP. Now my Windows 7 pc and my new Windows 8 pc don't even acknowledge that I've plugged the N7 in. When I plug in my LG phone it sees it right away, but is using the old USB Drive method. This tells me the problem is probably on my N7. I've tried the developer debug stuff several times. Anyone have any ideas on what else I can try?

I just came to post the same thing. Neither my Win7 machine at home nor the XP machine at work will recognize my N7. It will start charging but won't recognize it so I can move files.

I fixed this by using a higher quality USB cable. YMMV

This is the same cable that connects two different cell phones with no problem. It will also charge my N 7 without a problem.

Using the same cable I can connect to my Western Digital My Passport drive, two different cell phones, and charge my Nexus 7. I can't see where there would be any problem with this cable. When I plug in my cell phone, my system blurps, another drive shows up under File Explorer, and Device Manager shows a portable device. When I connect my Nexus, nada, nothing, bupkis. I have debug mode turned off, and USB set to MTP. Setting USB to PTP changes nothing. Is there a way I can un-enable Developer Mode?

Obviously, something is missing on the Nexus 7. I had hoped the upgrade to 4.3 would fix this, but no luck. Is there some way I can force the Nexus to totally reload Android?
