Hi
I joined this forum in the hope that someone can provide a decent answer. I'm on my second nexus 7. The first one having died on me. Now this one was working fine till about 2weeks ago. It started to get really warm when using it for even a couple of minutes at a time and my battery doesn't seem to be lasting as long as it used too. Downloaded a battery app and the the tablet seems to be operating between 80?f when just woke up and 99?f when playing games. Starting to heat up at the bottom left and work its way up to middle of the tablet.

Has anyway one else experienced this or should I see about a warranty repair/replacement

Thanks

100 degrees? It is 102 in NYC now. 100 degrees in an electronic device is not an issue.

I've just turned the tablet on to reply and it's 78.8?f. The back of the tablet is cool to touch. My question is does anyone else notice such a dramatic rise in temp within only 5-10 minutes of use. It's the fact the device itself heats up noticeably to touch when it never used to

Every single device I've ever had (including the iPad 3 I sold to get the Nexus 7) got warm-to-hot when doing processor intensive activities (like gaming, browsing with multiple tabs while listening to music in the background, etc.). I don't think you should read too much into it, unless it's extremely uncomfortable or unbearable.

Hi, dw049...

The problem with so many of the diagnostic apps now available, is one can became a liitle OCD about the numbers:(.

Your Nexus 7 is running a quad-core processor, with a scaling range of between 204MHz-1300MHz (with stock kernel)... but rarely do all four cores come 'online' at the same time. Unless you're playing some high octane video game!

Most of the time, with regular use (browsing/email/bit of YouTube), it's going to be 'idling' with typically only a couple of cores running. The more the CPU is 'pushed' via processing cycles, the warmer/hotter it will feel. And this is to to be expected.

The Asus engineers/designers will have tested the N7 to see what it's temperature failure threshold is. And the temperatures you quote... (which are battery temperature levels, not CPU temperature levels)...

"...between 80?f (27?c) when just woke up and 99?f (37?c) when playing games..."

...are well within safe limits. (I see these numbers routinely on my Nexus 7.)

The instant you wake the N7 up, you're bringing it out of sleep, which subsequently activates it's muti-core capabilities.

Think of it this way -- waking the device up after several hours DEEP SLEEP is a bit like defrosting it. Within a very short period of time (less than 10 minutes), the device is going to get a good few degrees warmer. (Exacerbated even more so, if you're using it WHILST charging it).

-----------------------------------

The reported CPU temperature can run a fair few degrees hotter than the reported battery temperature. After an hour or so of running Temple Run:Oz, I have seen CPU temperatures ranging from 115?f (46?c) to 144?f (62?c), with the lower left hand back of the device getting really quite warm. But again, well within safe limits.

10 minutes later, after a bit of a break, the Nexus 7 cools down pretty quickly... and with no long lasting ill effects.

----------------------------------

To summarize...

Unless you're OVERCLOCKING your Nexus 7 (for which you need a Custom Kernel that supports OC)...

...don't worry about the heat it generates...

It will get warm/hot from time to time - it's nothing to worry about. It's designed to deal with it.

Hope this clarifies a few things, and puts your mind at rest.

Enjoy your Nexus 7... without worry:):):).

Rgrds,
Ged.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was just concerned as the heat seems to be a fairly recent development.

Right the temperatures you should watch out for is if the cpu gets to be around 170+, that could actually start frying and or melting it. I just tuned up a HP desktop that was running at 212?f. Yikes, I'm lucky the proc didn't burn up.

Ended up returning my nexus today. Apparently the store has had a lot of nexus 7s returns in the last few weeks. Seems to be a flaw in the recent batch.
Might just wait till the nexus 7 2 is announced

Yeah, I might find a flaw in my Nexus 7 too if I just bought it in the last couple weeks and all these new Nexus 7 launching next week rumors start coming out. :)

I've actually had mine since jan. had no issues with it till June when it died and wouldn't turn on. The second unit was fine till the last week or two where it started running hot at the slightest use.
Had no idea there was a new nexus being launched till I started looking at replacements for the necus I'd just returned.
