I currently have the Asus Transformer TF101 and am wanting a new tablet. I want a tablet with a quad core processor, and have narrowed down my choices to these tablets that are all coincidentally built by Asus:
Transformer Prime TF201
Transformer TF300
Nexus 7 (16GB)
I know that they are different in such aspects like there price and such, but I'm still sorta torn where to go given all the differences. I know the Asus Transformer Prime TF201 has had wifi problems of some sort. I love the fact of Jelly Bean on Nexus 7. And I like how Transformer TF300 is a lot like the TF201 but less money. I want a tablet to watch videos like Netflix and Youtube, browse the internet, pretty much replace me going to my desktop. But that doesn't mean I NEED a physical keyboard, but it would be a great addition. Please help me decide on which tablet to buy!

I would get the nexus 7. It's cheaper, yet has similar specs. But most importantly, it is a nexus device, so you'll get the newest android updates for quite some time. There is no guarantee that the other two tablets will get jelly bean. Every review I've looked at has called the nexus 7 the "best Android tablet available." jelly bean and project butter make a HUGE difference in the functionality.

You are in the exact same predicament I'm in. I have an ultrabook and a Xoom 4g, this is either a replacement for my Xoom or a compliment.

I just don't know if the tf300 is worth the extra money when it's not a GED, (yes I'm an android purist)....I may just order the nexus 7 and return it if I don't like it.

10" tablets are awesome for watching movies and browsing the web. That screen real estate is just great. I have had two 10" tablets and sold them to wait for the Nexus 7 for a couple of reasons.

1) 7" is just a lot better to hold in one hand for reading, playing games, and watching Netflix is not bad at all on a 7" screen especially with the 12800x800 resolution that is on the Nexus

2) Portability

3) Google device. Tho ASUS has done a pretty good job at updating their devices lately and i'm confident they will continue to do so but you still can't beat updates to the OS straight from the source

4) most bang for your buck. Nexus 7 with the specs that it has for 200/250??? hell yeah preordered lol

The additional features the Xoom or other larger tablets have don't outweigh the terrible price difference.

I would say get the Nexus 7, but I wouldn't hold high hopes for it completely replacing your desktop. That is what I was hoping my Xoom could do, but it didn't quite cut it...

It will be a few years before any tablet will completely replace a desktop /laptop. I think the Primes and Tabs are the closest because of the additional equipment they offer to supplement the laptop experience and the additional storage options.

I sold the Xoom to buy the N7... a lot of people will think that is a stupid idea, but in hindsight, I never should have bought the Xoom to begin with.

And I also paid $850 for the Xoom....what a waste...

The Xoom at best was rushed to the market. Honeycomb was also IMHO, not ready for the market when it was released. The Xoom screen is awful, and it is very thick. The build is nice though.

I did often wish for a smaller tablet...it is difficult to hold 10" tablets a long time and the screens are also too large to comfortable type on with one hand. I think 7 - 9 in will be the sweet spot.

Also, since buying the Gnex, I enjoy the updates too much to have to once again rely on Samsung or Motorolla for them...

Thanks for the help. And about the "Replacing my desktop", What I meant to say was I want to do most of the things I do on my desktop on my tablet. But I know I still need my desktop for obvious reasons.

I might just get the transformer if this thing doesn't ship some time this week I sold my ipad and now I'm tabletless lol.

An android tablet will probably never replace your desktop. A Windows 8 tablet, coming supposedly at the end of the year will, if not immediately, then soon.

Windows is embedded in the enterprise, and it will take a while to move towards win8 tablets as most enterprises are just now getting into windows 7 (after the vista debacle).

But Microsoft, simply by reason of their current position, will dominate tablets in the future, IMO. Software will be the deciding factor, and is there software on Android to replace what companies currently use? No. It will have to be developed, and I don't think it will be primarily because it would be hard to be profitable.

Android will take a piece of the consumer market from Apple, pretty hard to take much of that. It might ever take some enterprise space, but even less of that once Win8 tablets get established. Sadly, like it or not, Microsoft will continue to rule in the business world. Too hard and expensive to pry them out I'm afraid. Doesn't matter if they're the best. They were once and embedded themselves. So they continue on.

Yes I agree, I really think that Microsoft will have a complete working windows Tablet with the Windows 8 Tablet (Surface I believe it's called) but.... I saw some mention of the price, it was like $1,000  I can buy a decent ultra laptop for that much, I just do not see MS selling many of these at that price.

"I just do not see MS selling many of these at that price."

OK one exception I guess, in the business / corporate world, but the everyday consumer is going to be hard pressed to part with a grand for a tablet.

Unless said tablet has specs that are identical to the most powerful ultrabooks, which are around that price point (if not more). The Surface Pro is a true laptop replacement, not just another competing tablet. I might replace by laptop with it when it comes out.

One thing: Microsoft has the best development tools available.... so I'm sure they will capture the hearts of developers @ launch.

I'm getting rid of my Transformer and dock because I rarely used the tablet and never used the dock. I've got a MacBook Pro as my travel laptop and a Dell XPS when I need to get some real work done. My Kindle Fire has been my every day tablet because it's the perfect size for reading and fits into some pockets. I'd be afraid to take the Transformer out and it's too heavy to hold for long periods of time. It's heading for the sale table as well since the N7 has all the pluses and none of the minuses of the Fire. Video? That's what my 24" PC monitor or 42" and 60" HDTVs are for.

I'd either get the Nexus 7 or try and hold out for the Transformer Infinity if you decide you want a 10 inch tablet more. It'll have a 1920x1200 resolution display and the faster T33 Tegra 3, for $500 (32GB). It's suppose to ship Monday I think.
