nexus 7 sleep mode

I have read the manual over & over, read all the forums, asked search in forums and even asked google and have not found the answer in plain English and the exact procedure to have the nexus go into & out of the sleep modes & what happens when it is in sleep modes. Every time I ask this questions it keeps telling about covers that make it sleep and you know what I bought my nexus 7 last week and also the cover at $19 using Google Play & the cover did not have the lid that makes it sleep. Any answers would be appreciated jimjoh

I suspect I don't quite understand the question... But it goes to sleep when you turn off the display with the power button or just leaving it idle for 30 seconds to 2 minutes (or whatever time your display timeout is set to).

That is about all I need to know about sleep anyway.

There is also what is apparently called "deep sleep" mode which is invoked by using the magnet built into a lot of case covers, which turns off WiFi and cuts power consumption even further.

I don't have a case for my Nexus yet, so I just use regular "push the power button and set it down" sleep.

As far as I know the magnet is not an advertised by Google at all nor the Google case. Only third party have discovered the magnet and make cases. Considering some cases were making screen turn off when folding around to the back, the exact nature of the magnet and how it works, magnet strength is probably still be trialed and tested by third party since nothing released by Google about it.

I think OP is talking about turning the display off and go to sleep when you close the Nexus 7 case...
I believe the case you bought don't have the magnet in it to switch ON/OFF. Google never market it that way...

I am sorry Ravynmagi but I thought my question was clear if you read it. How does some people say deep sleep but other than the magnetic cover is there a way to have deep sleep. I want to know in the maybe different sleep modes how do you turn them on & what is running & what is turned off. The reason this is important to me as my wife has great hearing & even though I had my unit in sleep it kept talking during the night & she was pretty upset with me this morning. I have terrible hearing so I heard nothing. That is not asking too much & if it is not important to you stop reading my post. jimjoh

I've got a case from portenzo which has a magnet built into the case to take advantage of that feature. When I close the cover it does shut the screen off. It does not shut off WiFi or Bluetooth as I am using it to stream media or other things. Hope this helps.

If you go into the advanced WiFi settings, there is an option to turn off WiFi when the tablet goes into sleep mode, maybe that is what you want.

I get message on my phone only when i press power button, otherwise it goes to deep sleep mode with wifi off.

I remember something about the Tegra 3 having a fifth low-voltage core that is used when it's in sleep mode (as opposed to any of the other cores running). I also remember something about the fifth core engaging on the Nexus 7 only when the magnet in the screen is triggered. In other words, pushing the power button doesn't activate "deep" sleep mode. Supposedly, you need a magnetic cover to do it.

I have no real understanding of how it works or if this is how it works honestly. If anyone knows more, please elaborate.

I have found out the hard way about the magnets I bought this really nice leather case. I really like the way it looks and works.

Few days ago I noticed my screen cutting out on me, thought I might have a defective unit. Couldn't figure it out. Till one day I am reading here about the magnets and the light bulb goes off over my head - when I am folding the cover all the way back and around - the magnets are too close to that edge and turning off the screen to sleep mode!

Now I just bend it back half way and all is well!

If the issue is that notifications are going off at night even though the screen is off (that is not sleep mode it's just a powered off screen) then either 1) Shut it down or 2) download a silent toggle widget.

I have the ebay mag cover myself and it seems to works well and it saves me from using the poweR button

I do have the advance wifi settings to only use wifi when plugged in however when it sleeps either to the button or the mag cover when not plugged in it will still awake if I tried to send a Google Voice Chat

I had the same problem - Nexus 7 kept turning on in the middle of the night after 4.2 upgrade. I finally figured out that it was the new "Daydream" feature. Go to Settings then to Display. Tap on Display and you should see an option called "Daydream". If it's on, turn it off and, hopefully, your problem will be solved. Turning your Nexus off should now cause it to stay off until you manually run it back on. Hope this helps.

I can't get my Nexus 7 to stay off. even turned off daydream feature and rebooted the device. Help!! I have installed the tablet in the navigation opening of my truck car audio system and I can't remove a tablet to turn it on or off.

Try installing an app called Wake Lock Detector. This can tell you which apps are waking the device up and how often.

hi thanks for the recommendation this isn't helping though because I have a lot of apps that I use that I need and can't Force stop, like for example my calendar app. is there another app that will disable auto wake?

The idea behind using Wake Lock Detector is to find out which if any app is inappropriately waking the device fully when it's supposed to be idle. You need to wait about a day after installing the app to allow it to collect data to report back. Ideally, your tablet would go through one of those self-waking episodes, which the app would then detect and log. You can tell the app to report Partial or Full Wake Locks--I'm guessing that actually turning the screen on by itself would count as a Full Wake Lock.

Most apps will cause some Wake Locks, which is normal--what you're looking for are Full Wake Locks from apps that you haven't been using, or an inordinately high number of Partial Wake Locks. The ultimate goal here is to see if there's an app you've installed that is misbehaving, because even if it's essential for your tablet use, you can still report the problem back to the developer.
