Nexus 7 tweaks for students

My nexus 7 is arriving to Pakistan on 22nd. i am really excited. i am a medical student and an avid reader of news and books. Can anyone advise me apps and stuff that will help me utilize my nexus to the maximum? and as payments to google play are a real hassle here in Pakistan, hope the things you recommend are free.

Try Taptu. it's free at the Play store and you can choose the news and sites you want to read. It's my daily coffee and news read.

Pulse and FlipBoard are good apps to pull from a variety of different news sources...

Personally, I have switched from using dedicated news apps to following news/press/etc. accounts on social media apps, like Twitter and G+. I like the fast, constant news updates on Twitter. Totally up to you though! But as for a news app, I'd recommend Pulse and/or Flipboard. They both do a great job at updating you on what's going on in the world.
