Apple unveiled the new Mini. So now...which should people go with?

I have to admit. I've been looking forward to the new iPad Mini announcement. However, the price point is hard to swallow. I want a 32 GB but I don't want to pay $500 for it. I am going to take a long look at the Nexus 7 now before I make a decision.

My wife has the original iPad Mini. I have the iPad 2. But I wanted a smaller tablet to carry with me. I decided to go with the Nexus 7 because it was cheaper in price and has lots of features including the HD display. I haven't regretted it yet. I've owned it for nearly 2 months now. Well worth it!

iFans will pay it. If people were stupid enough to pay that price for the first mini, they are going to be drooling over the second one. Apple is super shady intentionally skimping out on hardware (but not skimping on the price) so they have the ability to easily upgrade the following year.

I don't know if that is completely true. My gf who is a huge Apple user, looked at the price tag and took pause. She had her heart set on buying a 2nd Gen iPad Mini. Now she is going to look at other options just because of the price.

I rely on the built in GPS with the Nexus 7 which is mounted in the car. The thought of paying $629 for the 32GB LTE / GPS version of the Mini 2, with similar specs to get GPS is, to me, like throwing money away. This is coming from someone with an ipad 3,4 and probably soon to own the air after selling the 3. I've grown to like the customization of Android, the ability to watch full screen media in 16:9 rather than in letterbox or squashed 4:3 that comes with the mini or ipad. I also like the fact that with a small microsd adapter (meenova), I can top up with media on a few 64gb microsd cards and add a bunch of movies or tv content on it while traveling without running out of space on the device.

Not denying that the Mini 2 isn't a great piece of kit; just overpriced and comes with Apple's smug feel of superiority and confidence which makes them keep thinking they can price things way over the top. All in all, I personally think the Nexus 7 is still the best small tablet out there and I'd have no want, even if they were priced the same, to change the Nexus 7 for the Mini 2.

I was waiting on the announcement and the price tag for the Mini 2 was too much to swallow so i picked up the new nexus seven last night... Loving it so far and beats the hell out of my former playbook...

Spec wise they're near identical. Design wise, while I love my Note, it is tough to argue against the mini build...it's nice. App wise, iOS still owns the tablet space for the most part which may or may be a decider for some people.

For some people, especially if they're rooted in the Apple eco-system there is value even at $400 for the mini. But you really can't argue with the price on the Nexus, espcially if your tablet needs are rather generic (video, music, social networking, reading etc).

I own an iPad Mini which I was quite happy with. Though the display and specs are outdated, and sometimes you could feel it.

I was a big apple fan years ago, owned many iPhones. I don't anymore, the reason is lack of innovation and higher prices each year, not even the same high prices like last year... No, apple stuff gets more expensive each year.

So the reason for still owning an iPad were two things: First I own many iTunes movies, converting them takes a lot of time which I don't have. Second here in Germany the magazines you get from the App Store are quite a lot. Only few magazines have an android app here. Most magazines I read on my iPad Mini are free because of a print subscription. Now with Android this not unimportant stuff is missing. And... here you get iTunes gift cards 20%-30% off very often. So buying a magazine subscription through iTunes Store is 20-30% cheaper than on Android. We don't have that here with Android/Google Play gift cards. Magazines section should be available here till the end of november but I guess it will be much more expensive. And I don't think they have the selection on Android like they have on iOS.
And besides surfing the net on the go, reading magazines is the most important feature to me on a small 7-8inch tablet!
And Apple/iTunes is still way ahead there, at least here in Germany.
Still I decided to check out the Nexus 7 32GB LTE and am quite impressed with the display and the look and feel (just got it).

If only magazine subscriptions would get cheaper here and more variety of magazines... And a 64GB version is missing. Some people wanna watch some movies, have their photo collection with them, listen to some music etc.

Still a 250€ cheaper Nexus 7 for the same specs would change a lot of people's minds if they weren't apple fanboys.

iPad Mini 2 is just way too expensive. Only apple fans or people with too much money will buy that. I don't know anyone not already owning an old iPad (Mini) who wants to buy one. All are looking for android alternatives because of one simple thing: PRICE!

OT: If anyone knows a good Mac converter for iTunes movies, a fast and simple app, plz tell me!

I think I heard good things about this one (it also shows up as first search result).

iTunes Video Converter - Convert to easily add movies files to iTunes

I had the same issue with iTunes music. My wife had hundreds of songs from many years and she asked me to transfer it to Google Music. Most of them were fine but about 50 had this DRM (spelling?) lock. I spent hours trying to find free SW to unlock them. They either didn't work or somehow crippled songs and asked to buy a full version. Freaking iTunes wouldn't burn them to CD (another way to unlock) because it couldn't detect a drive LOL.... What aPOS. Anyway, I got so fed up that I just bought those songs again in Google play. Never ever going back to Apple ecosystem again!

So I suggest just paying for a tool if no one else has any ideas here. It's gonna save you a ton of time and aggravation. Just make sure this tool will remove any locks Apple puts on movies.

It sucks you don't have a big magazine selection. Google must brush up on this because here in US we get any imaginable magazine. It seems like a relatively easy thing to negotiate so hopefully it's coming... After all, isn't Android like 70% in EU?

Myself....I have a Nexus 7 2012 and 2013....and love them both....I'm planning on giving my 2012 to my brother......anyway, I also have an iPad 3 and like it, but I always complained about it being a little heavy and bulky for my liking. I plan on selling my iPad 3 and getting a Mini 2, now that they've updated the mini with the retina screen and updated to the A7 processor, it seems like a worthy upgrade.....I also like the size, because while I love my Nexus 7, I think the 8 inch format of the Mini is the sweet spot.

In my extremely limited experience the Ipads have much more accurate touchscreens. I don't like the touchscreens on the Androids I've had including this one. They are either OK or too sensitive or too insensitive. Am I wrong about that?

I have noticed no difference in the accuracy of the touchscreen between my Nexus tablets and iPads.
