Nexus 7 vs. Motorola Xoom

My policy is that I will only buy Google Experience devices from now on.

Since I already have the Galaxy Nexus, I need to decide on a tablet.

A lot of Nexus 7 users say that they like it because of its portability. The thing is, I don't want my tablet to feel like an oversized phone sans the cellular connection. When I need/want to do something with one hand while I'm on the go, I have perfectly good smartphone that has an almost 5" display that I pay to have a cellular data connection on. Also, the lack of a cellular data radio on the Nexus 7 further diminishes from its "on the go" appeal.

On the other hand, the Xoom is outdated. It is also a bulky tablet. While it would fit in my backpack just fine, I would probably only use it while I'm sitting down during my commute (I take public transporation to save money), during a meal or tea time, etc.

That's actually what I want in a tablet: something to use to consume multimedia, prolonged web browsing sessions, and something large enough to distinguish itself from a smartphone.

My budget will not allow for both.

Suggestions?

Get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. its different from the Nex, takes a sim and has a large screen

I had the Xoom. Having jellybean help a lot but I couldn't get over the bulkiness and the weight of the device. It was just a poor experience to use. I hand it down to my niece and she loves it cause of netflix and the abudance of free games.

I hardly ever used the camera and when I did it was such a poor picture on the Xoom. It was a no brainer for me to get the nexus 7. I love my nexus s and my current galaxy nexus and will keep buying the current nexus because of the pure Google experience.

Nexus 7 is just a dream and the touch response is so nice. I love the feel and weight of the device.

The only 10.1" I will use is the Asus infinity with a keyboard as a mini notebook. Not a tablet.

Get the Nexus 7, you can use your Galaxy Nexus phone as a wireless hotspot, so lack of cellular data shouldn't be an issue. Besides, who wants to pay for wireless broadband TWICE?! It's already overpriced as it is.

How many more updates will the XOOM see? I'll hazard a guess that the N7 will see at minimum the next two major Android updates ('Key Lime Pie' and... 'Lemon Tart'? Whatever they end up being called!). Do you think the XOOM will receive K and L Android OS? Do you wish to pay for extra cellular data? Is the XOOM hardware equal to the N7's quad-core Tegra 3 (I don't think it is)?

If you must have a 10 incher, there are rumors of a Nexus 10 coming at the end of the year.

Asus tf300 almost completely stock(only the pop up menu which has added quick controls) and most functional tablet in existence if you add the keyboard. Might be a little pricey, but it is worth every penny if it is what you want. Plus it is smooth as butter even though jelly bean had not landed yet but is just around the corner.

Of the two listed, nexus 7 for sure unless you are just super strapped for cash and find I zoom in someone's pile of unwanted electronics or something.

I had a Xoom and I like the device, although the size & weight were a bit much to hold with one hand. I sold it and bought a Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, 16gb, and I like the size much better. The only drawback is that Samsung brought out the Tab 2, and pretty much stop all software updates for the 7.0 Plus. (I have rooted it and installed ICS on it.)

I have the 8gb Nexus 7 and love it. While it doesn't have the storage my Plus has, it is great for reading and surfing. As none of the tablets take the greatest photos, I use my phone for that, so the lack of rear camera was not a point I'm concerned about. Granted it does not have all the perks of a "real" tablet, it does what it was designed for very well.

If you plan to hold it, I would go with the smaller size, but if desktop space is more important, find yourself a refurb or used Xoom.

My carrier would charge me to use the Hotspot feature, anyway. I just think of "on the go" as something I can use while I'm on a bus/train or walking down the street where there is no Wi-Fi connection available.

I've decided on getting the Xoom. While it is bulky and somewhat outdated, it'll likely only be temporary until the Nexus 10, which tech bloggers say is expected sometime this year, comes out.

Have you tried the Fattin hotspot toggle widget. I use that on my Galaxy Nexus and it bypasses the Carrier provisioning checks when I activate the hotspot. Works great with my Verizon Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 without having to pay extra for tethering. If you go through the menu to activate the hotspot, it checks the provisioning, but using the widget somehow bypasses the check on the GN. Unfortunately it didn't work on my wife's Droid Razr, but foxfi worked fine on her phone.

Definitely go with the Nexus 7. With the hotspot from your phone, features and price; its a no brainer.

I got the N7 to replace my Xoom. It's got Jellybean now but it's just to slow and heavy and bulky . BB will give me $85 Store credit so I might go that route. I also have the new iPad for times I want to use a full size tablet.

I have both an N7 and a Xoom WiFi. First off, about Google experience/AOSP devices, YES. It's the only way to fly. Jelly Bean within a month of release. Worth it.

Second, the N7 is by far and away the superior device. Spec wise, it's twice as powerful. The Tegra 3 performance is obvious over the Tegra 2, both on paper and in the real world. The Xoom is quick, but on Jelly Bean, there are stutters with the multitasking menu and notifications. The N7 just sort of glides through tasks. The Xoom is last-gen hardware and performs well, but it's showing it's age. In terms of future-proofing (sometimes a fool's errand), you're safer with the N7. I do like having a rear-facing camera, but it's more of a safety blanket. I never find myself using it on the Xoom.

Third, size. When you use the N7, you realize how condensed and focused an experience it is. I don't find myself wanting for a larger screen. The portability is fantastic. Big tablets feel like lugging around a laptop sometimes. The N7 is like a book. It really is all that you need in a tablet experience. And, frankly, the Xoom weighs a little less than the sun.

I get where you're coming from with the "just a big phone" thing, but it is a different enough experience between the N7 and my Galaxy Nexus that I don't feel that at all.

Two caveats. First, I worry about the N7's durability. You definitely want at least a sleeve for it. The Xoom, however, is built like a tank. I wouldn't drop it, but it'll take bumps and bruises no problem. Second, I can't imagine using the N7 for productivity. On the Xoom, I could use a Bluetooth keyboard to draft a document comfortably. The N7 doesn't feel right for that.

Bottom line: the N7 is superior as a consumption and entertainment device. The Xoom would be better for productivity. Long term, the N7 is where Google is heading with tablets. It's a convenient and powerful device that doesn't sacrifice much for it's size.

Judging from your post, it really sounds like you want a 10" tablet, so I would get the Xoom. I used to own a Xoom and I still think it is the best 10" tablet out right now. I would try and get a WIFI Xoom though. The #1 reason that I sold my 4G Xoom was due to Verizon blocking updates, but with the WIFI Xoom you don't need to worry about that.

I like having more productivity. I want a tablet that can replace a laptop as much as possible.

As far as the size goes, I'm still a bit weary. I've used other 7" tablets in the past, and they really did feel more like oversized phones than full-on tablets to me.

Google should release an 8.9" Nexus tablet. That sizes seems like the sweet spot between a miniature 7" and a gigantic 10.1".

P.S.
Does anyone know if the Xoom 2 is also a Google Experience device?

While the nexus 7 is a very good tablet, I am sticking with my wifi Xoom for now. The biggest reason is the fact that the nexus 7 does not have expandable memory capabilities. I VERY often transfer files (some of which are sensitive and confidential) via the micro SD card, as well as using it to store large files (ie movies). Being that these files are stored on removeable storage, they dont take up storage space on the xoom and its less likely that my xoom will be bogged down because of large file storage. Until Google makes another tablet with a micro sd slot I dont forsee getting rid of my Xoom in the near future.

i used to have a samsung galaxy 7" and dont know why i just didnt feel it is what i need. then sold it and bought motorola xoom...10"...and its great,
plus:
-touchscreen works great!
- i have wifi version so can use sim for internet everywhere
-two great cameras, front and back

minus:
-it is heavy comparing to the samsung!
- i dont like place where the charger connects as then if dont have charging dock with me, and need to charge can use my tablet only flat- as it is at the bottom!

i dont know why i REALLY LIKE MOTOROLA and im glad i bought it ;-0:-*
