Why is everyone saying "never", "don't".. let the kids use your stuff? Even us grown people break these things, it was an accident give the kid a break. I have two kids, they have their own devices not because I don't want them to break mine, but because I don't want them to use my stuff and load their silly games.

As for repairing this $199-$249, go get a new one if you really like it! Repairing it, if available now will cost you close to that anyway!

Nope, let them. But kids break things more often than adults do. They don't know yet that things break, and they don't know yet how hard it is to replace them. I recall giving my 11 year old niece a brand new Nikon camera to take pictures with at a graduation party. She came back 5 minutes later asking me if the "lens should be pushed in like that". Ummm, no, it really shouldn't. Should I complain or yell? No. She was my 11 year old niece and yeah, she broke it. Bummer. It's just a thing and I was well aware that it had an increased chance of non-survival with her. It sucked but that's life. That's what most people here are saying.

Contact Google for repairs!

Don't let kids near relatively expensive devices.

Remember to buy a solid case for the device. Even if you drop it, chances are better that the case will cushion the impact and save the device. Who cares if the case adds bulk or weight?! That's what cases are designed for... protection.

I had the same result, though this one was my fault. Had it in my pocket while sitting down. Got up, and it slipped out ... my screen looked just like yours.

I'm crushed that my 16GB model is wrecked after spending the whole weekend getting it all set up as I liked it.

I desperately tried a few different tactics. First, I tried a local screen repair shop - No parts. Next, I tried an online one - No parts. Then, I contacted Google, they sent me to Asus. Asus said they can repair, but won't quote a cost or amount of time. I sent it to them anyway, in the hopes that it works out well. It should arrive at Asus today, I'll keep you up-to-date on the outcome.

Needless to say, I feel your pain. Thinking about getting an 8GB right now, b/c I liked it so much, but I'm gonna wait to hear from Asus first.

I'm dying inside right now. Received my Nexus 7 Friday, finally had it setup the way I wanted. Let my daughter see it to play a game and with headphones attached, she pulled away from the table. All I remember after that is a scene from a movie where time slowed down, I said noooo, and unlike Kevin Costner in The Untouchables I wasn't able to save the baby.:'(

While it comes on, I'm not able to input anything to the screen. I know it's early but, is there a place you can send it for repair?

Mine fell off the desk at work. Same situation. I had the headphones plugged in, someone called me, I spun my chair and the nexus came off the desk. Same issue, cracked screen and the touch screen sensor is broken.

I called Google, they sent me to ASUS.

Mine is currently on the way to ASUS. Worst part, you have to pay for shipping, and they won't even give you an estimate on a repair until AFTER they receive the device.

This is why I tell my girlfriend her 7 year old nephew can't touch any of my stuff. I don't understand why parents let their kids use their expensive things. They are kids.

My 3 year old uses my 10.1" galaxy tab (IO edition) all the time. He has no issues and is very careful with it. Once you teach your kids the right way to use a device, it's not a big deal. If you see them doing anything bad with the device (he only uses it under supervision), you take it away.

He can operate the 10.1" tab better then my wife can. Loads his games, closes them properly with the back button.

One thing to note, parental locks are your friend. He purchased $99 worth of in game coins on my moms Kindle Fire . Needless to say, the in app purchases have been shut off on that Kindle now.

Thankfully Amazon refunded the purchase...

Oooooh, that stinks man! Have 2 of my own, one is 4 and the other is 2. They play with my phone and my wife's phone once in awhile. And also with my Touchpad. I've let the younger one play with my Nexus 7 once since I got it last week (Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is her favorite). Good luck with the repair!

I feel the pain of the OP on this one in a very real way. My SO finally weaseled my Nexus 7 from my claws yesterday... and promptly dropped the device onto the basement (read: Concrete) floor. It's currently on it's way back to ASUS.... and yeah I'm going to be footing the bill for this. *facepalms*

Thought I was one of the very few to have such bad luck with a new device. Started looking for cases, was waiting for a good one. My daughter is nine and she's pretty tech savvy (she's had a PC since four, iPod, my old Apple G5, and can operate my Canon 60D while taking good pictures) it's just one of those things as a few of you mentioned it happens to adults as well. She felt very bad and I will have a talk with her that mistakes do happen. Fortunately, my GS3 is arriving today to help take away the sting...

I bought mine with an American Express card - which has automatic purchase protection. So, I'm hoping for a refund from Amex....

Check to see if the method you bought it has a similar program.

Yep, that's why my 11 and 8 year old kids have their own laptops, smartphones and Kindle fires. Daddy does not share well with others.

My kids have a thing called an imagination. Oh and the outdoors and bicycles.

Second the credit (sometimes even debit) card check. Most these days have damage/theft protection for the first 30-90 days I think. I got a replacement camera from AMEX after my first one took a tumble into a river.

Ouch! What a horrible accident to happen to a little one. I agree with one of the posters above that if you teach them early to be careful with electronics, they will be. My wife and I let our 14 and 11 year old boys buy Ipod touches with their own money. My 11 year old cleans the screen every 15 minutes and is very careful where he puts it. He owns, it's his, he is very careful with it. So is my 14 year old, but he some how cracked the screen while it was in his pocket about a month ago. His lesson learned, he his saving his money to buy a new screen from the Apple store.

For those disdainful of parents letting children use their tech, here are a few simple words to live by. If you can't afford to replace something, your shouldn't buy it.
