Nexus 7 vs. Vinyl Floor

This is why I tell my girlfriend her 7 year old nephew can't touch any of my stuff. I don't understand why parents let their kids use their expensive things. They are kids.

My grandkids get to play games on my devices when I'm sitting right next to them on the couch to ensure nothing horrible happens. If they are unable to follow my instructions (calm, don't push too hard, etc.), then they get to find something else to do. They all know that I love them dearly, but the second chance comes the next time they are over for a visit.
I guarantee you one thing, their parents would not be offering to pony up the money if the OP?s situation were to happen. They couldn't afford to replace it any more than I would want to.

Edit:
For adults, and older teens, I will give a demonstration while they stand behind or to the side of me. Otherwise, they get to sit on the couch with the same restrictions as the younger kids.

If you paid for it with an American Express card, they cover accidental damage, theft and a host of other user related incidents. This applies to almost anything bought with the card for 90 days.
Not sure if it applies to their regular amex card but the gold and platinum definitely does. I have used it more than once.

Just a update.. ASUS received my device with the cracked screen last Friday. I still do not know how much it will cost to fix, or any ETA. Just called their customer service again and they stated that it's been received, but cannot give me a update until they determine what's wrong.

I'll help.

Step 1: Open Box.
Step 2: Look at screen, see the cracks.
Step 3: Turn on device, notice the touch screen doesn't work.
Step 4: Notify client.

Not hard...

Ouch. Accidents happen. I remember the time my husband go a WHOLE cup of coffee into the laptop. Wasn't even the two year old's fault. This is why we now use closed cups around the house. Course my husband still tempts fate and uses open cups around his laptop... Yeah this Nexus 7 was a gift to me, I'm keeping it mine own. The two year old has only seen the box it came in, so far.

That's hilarious.

I am in the exact same situation. They received my N7 last thursday, and said that I would have it back in 10-14 business days, though I still haven't heard what the cost will be to me. I have also noticed that I can't track my RMA online anymore. However, when I call them, they tell me that their techs have received the device.

Its not always bad, my son is coming up on his 3rd Birthday and has his own ipod touch, not because I dont want him to break my iphone, but because I want to use my iphone! Now in the last couple days he has discovered what a treat it is to watch netflix on my Nexus 7, so he has since almost taken it over. Most of my devices have accidental damage protection on them anyway, either by way of square trade or things like applecare (ipad3), so I am less worried about it. I think Square trade for the Nexus was only about $65 with accidental damage, so thats something to look into, better than having to buy a new one.

So much for the notion that the N7 has gorilla glass.....not likely that it does or this would not have happened........

I know I am going to be more careful tossing mine in a bag or on a couch from this point forward. Kinda stinks......a fall to a vinyl floor should not shatter a screen like that.

But I agree with previous posters.....better off just getting another one and putting that one aside in the event cheap parts become available in a few months. Right now gonna be tough to get that repaired cost effectively.

That seems harsh, returning the kid...are you allowed to do that?

haha best post in this thread :D

On a side note I use to hang out with a girl that has a 1 year old. She would give the child her Captivate like it was a child's play phone. The kid would chew on it and toss it around, made me shutter every time. They then wondered why their phone had a broken power button, messed up screen, and was overall beat to crap.

this isn't the first or last time someone's kids damaged their devices. My kids are now grown but I would never let them touch my things when they were small because this same reason.

This thread reminds me of Ferris Bueller and the Ferrari. Making this a bigger deal than it should be will only emotionally distance your children from you. The nexus is a thing, and things are never as important as people.

If you haven't seen the movie, its worth it for this bit alone.

I'll start a new thread so it's not lost here.

Finally heard back from Asus on my broken Nexus 7 16gb (Dropped, screen cracked and touch sensor is broken)

Parts: $85.00
Labor: $65.00
Shipping: $10.00

Final cost.. $160.00. Ouch.

I believe some people in this thread need to lighten up regarding kids with expensive electronics.

My daughter uses my iPod Touch all the time and I know one fall with the wrong angle and the screen is toast. But I want her to learn how to use and handle this type of thing because it's all over the place in the house. (iPad, PlayBook, Galaxy Nexus, eventually a Nexus 7 or Note 10.1...)

I've fumbled with things just as much in my later years. Heck, my wife just dropped her iPhone a couple days ago and was lucky enough the case prevented it from breaking. Some should clue in that kids aren't always that bad, and accidents happen with all ages. Period.

If a child never handles such things at all, they'll never learn how to treat it. And the sooner they learn, the more practice they'll have. Expensive training I know. But when it's your own child, it's worth it.

I have a 12 year old who screws up electronics in a whole different way. He LOVES rooting, flashing, and all the other hacking stuff. The other day he screwed his Nexus 7
( i have one too) up while messing around in ROM toolbox so I had to go in and fix it. Now, he makes new backups every week on Clockwork Mod Recovery. I think hes learned his lesson. I feel bad for those who have broken ones. Good luck with repairs! I would suggest buying a case that protects it and putting it on when a kid plays with it. My son has a Hard case for his Nexus.

I'm going to go to an unpopular place, if not repairable have you considered buying a new unit. Why people think when they break something due to their negligence that the supplier should provide a new unit for free has never made sense to me. It's called "responsibility".

He probably didn't realize the recovery bug, right? Going into recovery manually (via the bootloader) will sometimes result in no recovery being there. Plugging it in or using Terminal Emulator, Power Menu mods, etc., will make it work fine. I've been plenty of accounts of this.

Past that, it's nearly impossible to screw up a Nexus.

He flashed the rom to overclock his to 1.64 ghz so his Modern Combat games would get a small improvement. Then, he started getting curious and turned his dpi to 1 (it was already at 170). I used a command prompt to fix the build. prop section

I called Asus support today, they have it and are working on it (yet I'm not able to see this on my own). Good to know how much I'm looking at spending. I can't complain too much, Staples gave me a 16GB for the cost of an 8GB so I'm still ahead. My daughter felt bad about it and even spoke to my mother to get the money together to get a new on for me. I told her again, I'm not mad at her it's just an unfortunate accident. While I wait for the Otterbox, I'll cover it with something temporary. We live and learn.

Yes, that's exactly what I'll do if the repair is more than the cost of another unit. It's totally on me and I wasn't looking for anything from Asus other than a repair bill.
