Nexus 8 or iPad Mini, what's the best tablet for college?

1 gig is perfectly usable. Kitkat is designed to work on devices with as little as 512k. Kitkat runs awesome on my Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound.

On a $100 tablet you are not likely to get more than 1 gig on any platform.

It wouldn't get slower, even with updates?

A gig is usable, but if it ain't one of the newer devices optimized then a gig hurts day to day performance, I have a RAZR M and a gig hurts when multitasking and having more than a couple tabs in chrome is impossible, they have to reload to every one I go to. Going home, apps and widgets have to repopulate the home screen.

I wouldn't dare buy a tablet or phone with less than 2GB of RAM right now. For future proofing, and overall usability sake alone.

This thread helped me finalize my decision on the Shield. Ordered placed for 1 Shield Tablet, 1 Controller, 1 Case. Seems to be out of stock just about everywhere, so ordered straight from Nvidia.

Nope. If anything it might get faster.

Android has reached a saturation point with the OS/Hardware. It no longer needs better hardware to drive the UI. Even the crappiest phones released now can run Kitkat. Dual-core and 1 gig of RAM are the new "low end"...even the Moto E is going to be able to run Android L.

The limited RAM might afftect multitasking, but it won't affect the UI.

Oh wow, okay. I get it, thanks!

Hi,

I'm looking for a tablet for school.
It would be nice to take notes but I could probably make do with a good bluetooth keyboard as long as the device could access either Google Drive or a Micro Word alternative app.
It should probably have at least 2 RAM, I don't know how much faster that is than 1 RAM but I heard 1 is too slow.
So I need Bluetooth, and either expandable memory or 16GB+ built in.
Preferably under $500.
Any ideas?

1(GB) Ram isn't slow, but for $500, it ought to be 2GB. And the moment you state Google, go for nothing but Android. Sure, iPads ARE the best tablets for studies, but Google experience on Android is a thing an iPad can't beat. Want Google? Go for Nexus. Want better study guide? Nothing but the iPad coz iOS has very great apps for study. Best of luck from a middle school student :)
