Nexus is dead, what next?

So, my Nexus has now been rendered useless. It will not boot. I have tried all the tricks from XDA, AP, AC, Google. Even talked to a guy at Google. I have some accessories, which include a like new official dock, for sale in the Marketplace Forums. But the big question is, for anyone who has gone through this or looked into it. What tablet is worth buying next? Or, do I try to find a new/refurbed and hope it doesn't exhibit the same issue? I really don't want to spend more than a couple of hundred. Have considered the Nvidia Shield, but, it's a year old now. And isn't a Nexus.

Just looking for thoughts and input.

Recently introduced tablets haven't really been that overwhelmingly impressive, so I don't think a Shield would be a bad choice. Nvidia has proven to be pretty good with updates so far. And the hardware is still very good.
