Nexus S 4g, Epic 4g, or Evo 4g

I need some help. What should I get? Yesterday my wife dropped my Epic 4g in her coffee, I brought it to BB for repair, they don't believe it can be fix since the screen is dead. They r waiting for approval for replacement. They said I would beable to choose from another Epic 4g (no charge), Evo 4g (no charge ), or the new Nexus S 4g ($50). I liked the Epic, but I don't need the keyboard. I keep on hearing great things of the Evo (I really like HTC Sence, and idea of a big screen). But I don't know to much about the Nexus S. Is the Nexus really that much better then either one? I know all 3 have a 1g processer, but really what are the differences? Is gingerbread really that much faster? I need someone to really spell it out (I'm kinda tech dum when it comes to phones). I don't want to make the wrong decision and regret it in a month.

Nexus S 4G

I wouldn't get the Evo 4G, its a year old. Has the 1st Gen Snapdragon processor, and the battery life is horrrrrrible! The Epic is nice, if you need a keyboard, but if you don't, get the Nexus S, they both have 4inch SAMOLED screens, 4G, and the Nexus S will get updates first, and everything is easy to root and play around with. I would pick the Evo 4G, hahaha jk, get the Nexus S 4G.

Well the main appeal of the nexus is vanilla android (ie no sense or touch wiz) which some ppl including myself prefer also you will get the latest android updates before anyone else because the nexus devices are dev phones, as for GB being better it has alot of code changes in the background most ppl won't notice but yes it is better than froyo. I would say you won't be disappointed with either the nexus S 4g or the evo 4g but if you can try both before hand and compare that would be best. The nexus S 4g won't be out until the 8th so (waiting impatiently myself lol). Hope that helps.

If you like the Sense UI, then try it out. You might be able to talk to them into doing a 30 day exchange with a new phone, but don't get your hopes up. However if you can, pickup an Evo to get a feeling for it. If they allow you to exchange it within 30 days or so and the Nexus is out, see if you can switch.

Sounds like you're a simple user and don't need all the fancy benefits of a Nexus. Your processor speed isn't going to matter and the screens are all the same size. The SAMOLED screen is better than a normal LCD that the Evo has, but that also shouldn't matter to you.

If I were you, I would just stay with an Epic or get a Evo. Personally I like trying new things unless there is something I know that I will love forever (Nexus). My mother has a Evo and now my brother has an Epic. I've used the Evo for a while and don't really like the UI (compared to a Magic and the Nexus) but am surprised at its performance and ease. She has had some battery issues (I believe the phone is ~8-12 months old now) but usually you can get that replaced within warranty or just buy an extended one for cheap. I barely played with the Epic but coming from a Magic, the keyboard is a lot better than I thought.

I would go with Nexus if you can wait.

We have 2 Epics (tried the Evo, love the Epic - its kinda like Chevy vs Ford, everyone has a preference, both good). Mine is hacked and rommed, actually running Gingerbread right now, don't use keyboard. My husband's is stock, won't let me touch it, uses keyboard.

I would trade up for Nexus right now - I would prefer slimmer with no keyboard, I carry in my pocket. Hubby wouldn't like, he wants his keyboard.

The phone is the same, only running Gingerbread and thinner. For the casual user, it won't appear any different. It does NOT have Touchwiz (Samsung's interface, which I don't use), nor any Sprint apps (which I don't use). No Swype

If you are savvy, you can add anything you want - through market (various launchers will replace the vanilla Android, I use ADW, but Launcher Pro, etc., will load). Google Maps does navigation. However, it is believed, but not verified (I talked with Sprint Manager after his training), that anything can be loaded with the exception of Swype and Sprint programs. They weren't sure, so that will be maybe, probably, but maybe.

So all of this decision depends upon what you use and how good you are. If you have rooted and played with roms, don't want keyboard - I would jump in a heartbeat. If you want everything set up for you, go with Epic. Remember Evo is being replaced next month, so . . your call.

Hope this helps.

A big negative against the Nexus for me (and several others, it appears) is the lack of an SD card slot. It has 16GB and no capacity for expansion. Not sure if this is something that would affect you, but it's something you should consider. For photos and music, probably would take a long time to reach max. capacity, but some folks like storing/watching movies and videos on their phone, which can take up a lot more space a lot quicker.

I have both the Epic and the Evo, both really solid choices. In my personal use experience there is no practical difference in battery life between these two despite the common claims that Evo's battery is terrible.

The Evo is a bit sluggish compared to the Epic, Sense is nice but in my opinion is just basically eye candy that robs you of some CPU performance; a rooted vanilla Android Evo is certainly faster. Ditto in regards to Touchwiz, both shells do a decent job in improving out of the box functionality at the expense of some performance. By contrast the Nexus is as plain as it can be, you will have to search the market for any and all goodies that you like to make your experince better.

Screen quality, I do prefer the Epic's - and by extension the Nexus'. The diffence in size between those and the Evo's is not too significant in real life. I personally like the more compact form factor of Epic but have little use for the slider keyboard.

Both being great phones, I do prefer the Epic's smaller form factor, screen quality and snapier performance a bit over the Evo's. Since I don't like the slider keyboard, find myself carring the Evo more frequent than not. That is why I like the Nexus, has the Epic's screen quality and better processor/gpu unit with no keyboard (like the Evo) in a physical package that is a bit more compact and phone-like than the Evo.

A built-in kick stand would be very nice though :D

just sign up for the swype beta and itll work fine if you want swype.

I'd sign up for the swype beta now, though, even if you don't have the phone yet. who knows when they'll close the beta again and once that happens, if they'll ever open it.

Nexus. If you dont use the keyboard why have the screen wobble. Why go back to buggy 2.2 when you have have vanilla 2.3. Why go to the evo when the new one is coming out and once if it gets 2.3 your pretty much done from there.

Ive already, after months of thought, decided to trade my epic in for the nexus s.

see i dont even have to burn an upgrade to get my nexus(and the price is less is perfect, all i pay are taxes on the cost of the phone) so if i like the evo 3d i can just switch to it with my upgrade. But i dont think i will. I see EVO's all day long and the lcd will have a one or two bright white spots in them and i cant stand that. Screen has to be same color all the time.

Guy at work has the atrix. Same screen. Did some picture comparisons. I cant ditch amoled for that garbge. Ooo you got my pixels. Good for you. Everything just looks smaller. Where are your colors? Garbage.

If i was in thia boat i wouldnt have thought about it so long as i have and made choice for the nexus. The great hardware without the bs.

You could always use your upgrade for the google phone.

I loved the epic till the software messed it up. Nothing else intrigues me just yet. The evo 3d maybe if they got rid of the 3d and put in a 10mp camera and super amoleD.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'm going to wait for the Nexus S. It just seems like the best phone.
