I believe you can do it when rooted but it's supposed to be a pain to do.

I'm not rooted because I can't be bothered lol.

I'm slightly disappointed with the range of the tags I got, I have to hold it right close to the tag.

Yeah pretty much same here mate. Can't be arsed rooting!

Yeah must admit I'm a bit disappointed with the range too. I bought hang tags, key fobs and stickers and ALL of them have to be pressed against the back of the phone pretty much directly. I'd say 5mm range tops.

Yeah that's about the same for me, a centimeter at most. Not exactly as useful as I'd hoped... there'll be a day when I'm s bit clumsy and slam the phone against the wall lol.

My car tag is on the steering wheel, that seems to work alright.

The tags I got from Shop4NFC - Buy Discount Android NFC Tags are always able to trigger without me having a actually touch my phone to the tag. I would guess the range would be somewhere around 5cm. Supposedly NFC has a range of up to 10cm but from my experience that would be in ideal conditions, also not sure if having a protective case (as most devices do) affects the range.
