Nice camera comparison between iPhone 5 and HTC One

Normally I wouldn't go near iMore but I agree, this was a pretty good comparison. I disagreed with some of the results as I preferred the One in some photos and the iPhone in others. I was surprised by the darkness of the HTC's photos though, I wonder what was going on then...

Seems accurate. I'm not blown away with the picture taking ability of the One, I think my iPhone 4s did a better job.

iPhone seems to do a good job on exposure metering, from my experience. It also takes acceptable shots in good light without having to make adjustments. It is rather poor in low light. Tends to get a lot of motion blur and noise. The saturation is a bit overdone and the color balance isn't great.

HTC One needs better exposure metering, more dynamic range and better software for adjusting settings. The one kills the iPhone in low light and can take excellent photos all around - but it takes more effort to get the exposure right. The color balance is typically better and the shots are not oversaturated which means that adjusting the pictures in post processing has better results.

If you don't think the one can't take impressive pictures, there are several in the photo thread that are quite impressive. This inidcates that the camera is quite capable in the right hands.

I agree, but one shouldn't have had to take a photography class to get good pictures the majority of the time. My expectations from the iPhone are a bit different I guess. I could almost always get a good shot with it without messing with settings. It may just be an adjustment I have to make in either the way I use the camera or my expectations.

While I think that is a fair and balanced comparison, I don't really agree with some of the shots taken based on my own experiences. I am much happier with the panoramic shots from the One, than my 5. I think I get better depth from the One, although I think in certain highly lit situations, the photo can look a little blown out, which I think is attributed to the white balance settings. I agree with the low light shots 100%, the iphone 5 has horrible marginal-light and below performance.

I really love this feature, but they need to fix the issue of not being able to take panoramas with the phone vertical as it should be.

I must be missing something. When I think of panoramas, I think of wide vistas of outdoor landscapes and thus, landscape orientation, not portrait! Do other phones allow this? On a slightly different but related subject, I wish phones blocked video recording in portrait orientation. It's not how we watch videos. TVs and movie screens are not in that orientation (for good reason). It always annoys me so much when I see a youtube video or some news story where you can barely see any of the scene.

The idea with portrait is that you can get a bigger panorama as the resolution is greater in that direction. i.e. the panorama stitching together mutliple portrait shots vs. multiple landscape shots gives allows more vertical coverage of the scene.

Exactly. Why have a short pano when you could have a taller one capturing more of the scene?

Ah, I think I see what you are saying now. So I guess back to my question. Do other phones allow that? Does the iPhone? The S4? Just wondering if there is a difference between the other major phone brands.

I know the iPhone 5 does. Not sure about others.

I was always upset that my iPhone 5 couldn't take panoramas in landscape mode. I guess it really doesn't matter, though. The results seem to be the same

My Note 2 does panorama in portrait and landscape, so I would think the S4 does too. I usually use landscape, but having the portrait option certainly is not a bad thing. :) Maybe HTC will add it later. Or maybe you can just use a different camera app to do it.
