No 5ghz with Nexus 7?

Sitting around my apt/condo last night, I noticed download speed really dragging. Both my my N4 and N7 have the Band set to Auto. Out of curiosity, I changed the Nexus4 over to 5ghz and got twice the speed over the Auto setting, so I assume that was 2.4 ghz. I tried the same 5ghz with the Nexus7 and but couldn't get a connection at all this way. What gives? Does the N7 not have the hardware for this?

Since I'm in an apartment building, competing with neighbors for bandwidth, what should I tweak on the device or router side? I have noticed it gets faster late in the evening.

Yes the new N7 has 5GHz WiFi. That's the only reason it now supports Miracast (even though that feature is useless with the input delay and stuttering video that might not sync the audio)

5GHz has a shorter range, so it will be slower than 2.4GHz at a large distance from the router. At close distance, the 2.4 could be slower than 5 due to the interference on 2.4.

Also, make sure the router security for 5GHz is set to WPA2 only. If you use a combined security option, the 5GHz will not use full 'N' speeds.

Whoever is administering the network at your apartments should have the different bands on different SSIDs so that you guys know what's available to you. But yes the Nexus 7 does have the hardware for 5ghz operation.

Let me rephrase this a little. With my home Cisco Linksys router, I can switch to 5 ghz band on my Nexus 4 phone. I cannot, however, make that same switch to 5 ghz band on my Nexus 7. Why is that?
