No alert operates in Android until that gmail account opens in Windows 10

I set an email alert in gmail on my windows 10 computer and then on my android smartphone. Many times the alert does not operate on my smartphone until gmail is opened on my computer.

What can be done to have the android alert not be dependent on opening in windows first?

Every single notification has now worked since 8-21-17. I have not opened this Gmail account in Windows 10 since that time. There must be some sync problem between Windows and Android that I am now avoiding.

The contrast in getting notifications is huge.
