No app update notifications

Chiming in: I have this issue on one of my 2 Galaxy S22 phones! All notifications as previously suggested are already turned on. Notice, 3 updates available, but PLAY STORE shows NO NOTICICATION.

Update for anyone reading this far: There is a report to Google so hopefully they will look into it. If you have this problem, please go to the following link and "star" the issue to let them know you have the problem too. If you want to, a comment can also be added with specifics. Thanks!

After skimming this thread it reminded me that Google tested out not notifying users of Play Store updates to keep the notification shade cleaner. I googled for stories about it, and it turns out it's something they tried out in 2020. It looks like Google rolled back on that later the same year, but apparently it hasn't worked properly since for some people. I don't get the notifications, but never gave it much thought to be honest because I never really used it to begin with.

I just got a notification for app updates. First I have had but wanted to share.

Google does seem to often make black or white decisions rather giving users a choice. You would think if they had to go back and forth, testing, etc. that would mean that a fairly even number of people like it one way or the other. A perfect case for an on/off switch in settings. Some, like you are fine without being notified. But others, like me want the notifications. In my case it is because without them, I can sometimes forget to manually check for updates often enough. Once recently when I checked, I had over 30 updates. And that is on a new phone where I am more on top of things. Without the notifications, I can see eventually getting myself into a situation where 80% of the installed apps on my phone need an update and I have forgotten to check for weeks.

The other thing I question is the idea that Google changed this a while ago and across the board. When I last used my Pixel phone about 3 weeks ago, I was getting update notifications every day. But I have never received them on my S22. There were about two weeks where I was using both the Pixel and the S22 and getting them on the Pixel and not on the S22.

I was reading through this thread again & I was wondering if you get update notices from the Galaxy Store.Screenshot_20220327-120939_One%20UI%20Home.jpg

Hmmm i don't get notifications from either Google or Samsung stores about updates. Don't think I ever have. Not sure I would want it. I have always just been in the habit of checking once a weeks or so.

I don't get them on my Pixel either, or at least not regularly enough to remember seeing one.

Hmm. I wonder if it worked up until I got rid of the Pixel a couple of weeks ago because it was a Pixel 2XL with an older operating system. Maybe on the older Android versions it was still working.

Not really sure. I've stopped trying to understand Google's idiosyncrasies. LOL

I'm surprised that only 3 people in this thread have posted that it's working.

I preformed a factory reset last week on my s22 Ultra as I wasn't completely happy with the performance. Notifications were slow or non existent. Simular to what you mentioned in your post #8. I only restored the wifi settings, contacts, calendar, messages & call logs from Smart Switch. I didn't bring over any app settings, homescreen settings or apps themselves. I reinstalled all my apps one by one from the Play Store.

As much work as it was, the phone performs much better now. However, I don't remember conclusively if I saw the Play Store update notice before I did the wipe. It works fine now. I know you mentioned a possible wipe in the future...

It's frustrating when a feature you want doesn't work, with no clear resolution.

Yes, I have read that transferring app data rather than setting up each app from scratch with a new download can cause some issues. Wish I had read that before setting up my phone.

Mine says last updated two days ago. I was never notified of this update and never notified (or at least as far as I can remember on my Pixel 4XL) of updates on my 4XL. However, I always get a update on my Samsung Tablet, but I do not have the tablet set to update without notification.

This issue happens to every one of our Android devices at one point or another... and we have many different ages, brands, and versions of Android running on them. We get notifications for available updates sometimes, other times we don't. I think it's a lot like Google's RCS messaging.... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I don't worry about it anymore and just check for updates every few days... update what I want, skip the problem updates like Speech Services or any other update that I've read is the problem child of the moment, and go about my day.

This seems to be life with Google lol.

Unfortunately true. The main issue is the mentality at Google that Google knows best so there is no need to listen to what users want. I am not optimistic that the ticket in the Google reporting tool will come to anything as they usually do not. We do not need to discuss Google Contacts specifically here as that would be off topic, but just as an example of why I don't think Google will address this Play Store update issue:

Contacts in your Google account can be sorted by either first or last name, if you are in/on the main Google contacts page on the web or on your phone. However, even if you choose to sort by last name in your Google account, when you are in Gmail, all lists will show sorted by first name only. There is no way around that and users have been pleading with Google for years and years to make the sort order you choose stick in all places you use the contacts list, of which email is the most common. Google will not acknowledge or fix this. The only way people make it work if they want contacts sorted by last name is this convoluted work around: In Google contacts, put a person's last name in the first name field and their first name in the last name field. Now when in Gmail, because you have the last name in the first name field, contacts will "appear" to be sorted by last name. Then in your main Google account contact settings, choose to sort by "First" name. Again, because you have put the last name in the first name field, they will "appear" to be sorted by last name there also.

Yes, life with Google....

So this morning I thought, "it has been 2 or 3 days since I manually checked the Play Store to see about updates. Indeed there were 32 apps sitting there that had updates. So it would really help if Google would fix this. I know there will be times where I might forget to manually check for 5 or 6 days and then virtually every app that I have will have an update waiting.

Even tho you have it toggled on for updates available, click the actual updates available line and it opens another settings screen. Make sure it's not set to silent and show notification is on.
