No contacts in my contacts app

I have an Honour 10 Lite running Android Pie 9.0 and have connected to my Google account. Email and calendar are syncing just fine. But the contacts app says I have no contacts. It offers me the option to sign in to an account. If I select this option it shows that I am signed in and that my apps are synchronising.

I have screenshots of contacts app and accounts page, if that helps. But can't see how to add them to this question.

I am brand new to Android and wonder what I am missing/ doing wrong?

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Accounts>Google​ and look at the Contacts sync option. Is it on? Does it say anything about a Sync Error?
