No free tethering with Nexus 6?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Do you have unlimited data? This issue might be specific to that.

Nope - I have a family plan with 30GB shared data over 5 Lines. If the AT&T Phone 'communicates' well to the new Sim, it will transfer the IMEI info over to the network but with unlocked non AT&T Phones, it is 50/50 that it will or won't have tethering connection. My local AT&T Manager knew straight away that was the issue when I complained of my new unlocked phone not working properly. As soon as he entered my IMEI number, the Hotspot feature worked flawlessly.

Doesn't cost you anything to try - hope it works for you!

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

If you pay for tethering you'll get it, I would think. I'm on Verizon with unlimited data. Every phone I get I can't tether, meaning the toggle is there but when you turn it on you get a message saying you need to check with your carrier and pay for tethering.

I had the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and it was locked down but there were work arounds.

Interesting. I still have the GNex on VZW and tethering works for me. However, I'm not on the stock software, I'm using some very simple ROM on 4.4. So maybe VZW locked down tethering on their carrier-specific ROM?

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Has anyone tried tethering with the Nexus 6 on Verizon unlimited data yet? I've been using Foxfi with my Razr Maxx for a couple years. Hoping to continue with my new Nexus 6 when it arrives. Thanks in Advance!

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

You need to be rooted and with root manager you have to edit build.prop for att and sprint you have to edit file with sqlite database editor in the com.provider.settings folder edit settings database add this line
(Global)
tether_dun_required
Set value to 0 then save and reboot
Then boom goes the dynamite

I've tried CKaelin and it doesn't work (I have an unlimited plan). I just pay for it now but hoping something comes out that doesn't require root.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I work for AT&T and can confirm that the tethering issue is due to you having unlimited data plan. AT&T does not allow unlimited data to tether. It never has. Previous unlocked devices had loop holes that allowed it because AT&T had not set the device to restrict it before, but now with AT&T selling the device directly, their is software put in place to keep it from allowing you to tether unless you switch to one of our share value plans.

I have a 10Gb mobile share plan and have been unable to turn on the tethering on my Nexus 6. It says there is a temporary problem that is preventing the hotspot function.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

I've been reading that this is only affecting users on AT&T.
When I pick mine up on T-Mobile and its blocked, I may be forced to go back to my N4.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

It works on my Iphone 6 plus with the same nano sim. I hope this is not related to the sim being originally from the Iphone, that would be messed up.

WRONG!!! I have a pure Moto X with ATT and grandfathered unlimited data plan since the old days and my tether function works great without errors or issues. Aparently, working for ATT doesn't mean people there know a lot about phones, which is my experience with most ATT emps.

Are you referring to broadcasting a wifi hotspot? And I assume you're not rooted or anything. I'm just curious.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Yeah, Matthew from Att is wrong. It works on my 2014 Moto X too. And BTW I bought the Nexus from the T-Mobile store, and the Moto as an Att phone. So at the very least this is inconsistently applied.

I'm so annoyed by this crap. I use less than 5 GB of this plan every month. I tether about 500 MB thereof. I ought to be able to do so without the provider telling me how to use my data. They loose nothing by my doing this. I know Att regrets ever having offered these plans, but trying to make me switch this way is control freak insanity. Time to start thinking about switching providers. At least I have an unlocked phone lol.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Works flawlessly on T-Mobile of course. Why anyone that has T-Mobile coverage in their area chooses to use any other carrier is beyond me.

Actually, I would bet that *IS* your problem. If you log onto your My AT&T account through the web, I bet your data plan is labelled as belonging to an iPhone. (Like, the actual plan name is probably something like "XGB Mobile Share Plan with unlimited text, messaging, and tethering for iPhone")

I had something similar happen with AT&T in the past where I had to call them and get it changed to a regular 4G LTE data plan.

I'm hoping this is the case for everyone. Would it be too much to ask for you to check the T-Mobile My Account app and see if you are using any data for tethering?

As you can see with my N4, I'm not using a single MB of tethering data although I use it daily. For everything in my apartment.

I immediately uninstalled the My Account app on this phone and will not use it on others. Refuse to have any bloat.

Seems like hotspot is included, they don't bifurcate the data measurements?

Also, does that say 32gb??? Whoa.

I only installed it to take the screenshot and show that my tethering data isn't being used.
I hope that's the same with the Nexus 6.

And yes, I use my device as my internet source in the apartment. Comcast sucks and Verizon just wasn't cutting it.

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Some background information suggesting that this is an unavoidable issue with ATT http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/11/24/the-stark-contrast-nexus-6-on-sprint-and-t-mobile-vs-att/

Re: No free tethering with Nexus 6

Interesting thought. My SIM happens to be from the iPhone 6 I got to finance the Nexus as well. But it seems like this is a note fundamental issue than that that will happen with any ATT SIM: [The Stark Contrast] Nexus 6 On Sprint And T-Mobile Vs. AT&T
