No longer receiving email notifications?

I went a whole day without checking my email because of this I am using the Gmail application. Is there anything that may have gotten unchecked somehow? Where should I check? I checked in the app settings to receive notifications but I can't find any option that asks how often it should check for new mail that I can see.

Basically my email is not being updated automatically, I have to manually refresh my inboxes to see if I have any emails it used to do it automatically every 30 minutes now it doesn't do it automatically

This just started happening to me this morning. Using a nexus 6. Was not having any issue and I woke up to no notifications, but when I opened Inbox I had 23 unread emails.

Is this for your gmail or for Inbox? This is only for my Inbox. Gmail itself works fine.

Figured it out. Make sure sync is on. Mine was having a syncing issue. Go to your Settings app, then Accounts, then Google , and open the email account in question. See if the box next to Inbox is checked. My said Sync error. I unchecked it then rechecked it and now I am back up and running.
