No media volume unless headphones are plugged in?

Like the title says...out of nowhere today my 4 day old Nexus stopped playing media volume through the speaker. I still get notification sounds, ringtones, etc. But if I want to watch Netflix or listen to music, the only way to hear anything is with headphones plugged in. Also, voice search all of a sudden only works when headphones with a mic are plugged in.

Any ideas?

I created an account just to say I am having the same issue. I am running my phone rooted and unlocked. I am at work right now but will flash back to complete stock when I get home and have access to the sdk. If that doesnt fix it then I guess its off to a verizon store for a replacement. Have you(OP) gotten anywhere with this issue?

This definitely seems like bad hardware. can you go into settings > sounds and make sure everything is 100% up and try again? I know that my netflix's plays REALLY low so if you have the volume at 1/2 you might not be able to hear it. let us know!

I did a factory reset and all is well. Hopefully it stays that way. Kind of a pain.

Everything was completely up. But No matter what I tried, it wouldn't recognize the speaker. Turning the media volume up or down in settings yielded no sound confirmation. Voice recognition was nil, and phone calls could only be made on speaker phone. After the factory reset, it's back to normal. But I'll be monitoring it.

I checked those settings as well i also tried downloading Volume+ as kind of a last ditch effort. I'm glad the factory reset worked for you, gives me hope. Kind of a pain of an issue, I'm glad I'm not the only one though. I'd be intrested to know what caused it. We deffinitly were suffering the same issue though cause I have the same symptoms(no media audio without headphone yet still notification volume, lack of voice input). What changes had you made to your phone before it happened if any. I noticed the issue after flashing Peter Alfonso's Bugless Beast nightly, but the issue persisted after reverting to a back up so I think I may have had the issue before and just not noticed. The last time it deffinitly worked for me was the night before last I listened to music in bed off the external speaker.
(Pardon my spelling, it was never my strong suit and this computer doesn't have spell check)

The only thing I had done to the phone was to unlock the bootloader, but that was when I first got the phone. No ROMs or anything yet. I too tried the Volume+ first, but that did not resolve it.

a lot of people facotry reset their phones the second they get them before they make any modifications. Its a good idea because of the crap that verizon put on the phone can affect other apps. I glad the reset worked for you. ENJOY!

I just tried wiping the data and cache in clockwork mod recovery, still no dice. I guess its gotta wait untill I get home thanks for the help though

Sorry to hear that. I wish I had a better idea of what caused the issue in the first place. The only app I had installed that day was Light Flow, but I don't think that would cause it.

I got home and did a full wipe still with no luck. So i took it to the Verizon Store and they gave me a replacement. It's weird we had the same symptoms and you were able to fix yours i wasnt.

I am having this exact issue right now. Another thing is that when I try to do a factory reset, the phone shuts off, loads the "Google" screen and does nothing. Then I do a battery pull and it restarts to where I left off.

I'm thinking I'll be going to Verizon but I think I'll have to wait until Monday when they're open again.

I had the same problem. Verizon said that there would be a software update at the end of February, but I couldn't wait. Do a backup of your phone (Nandroid if you're rooted). Download the ToggleHeadset2 apk ( toggleheadset2 - Headset toggle widget for Android 1.6 - Google Project Hosting) and then install it. (you have to sideload it since it isn't "compatible" with the Galaxy Nexus.) Then reboot and test.

I then uninstalled the app because installing it apparently reset something back to the way it was before. I noticed that phone calls were laggy afterwards. So I did restored my backup and it works like new.

If anyone else comes across this problem, try an app named SoundAbout in the Google Play market.

Hi, this happened to me yesterday. I bought the phone used 2 weeks ago and has been working fine.
I installed SoundAbout and am able to re-route the sound to where I want, but this is not an ideal solution.
The question is...why did this happen in the first place?? My phone was off for a day. When I turned it on, this started happening. No new apps, no water, just no media volume unless the earphones were plugged in. I did factory resets, restored other ROMs (I am on CM 10.2).
I saw somewhere that maybe dust go into the headphone jack so the phone thinks headphones are plugged in? If so, how would I clean it?
Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Try Sticking a Paper clip/ hair pin in headphone port. What it does is it cleans away any dust that got in. But it does not work for everyone but still try it. I hope it works for you.

Re: No volume for anything unless headphones are plugged in?

I was in the middle of a call when the person I was speaking to (I was using the speaker function) couldn't hear me. The speaker and mute functions were not working then I realized I had no sounds for anything, buttons, screen lock, nothing. My phone completely functions but the only time I hear it ring or can hear any sound function is when I have a headset attached. If the phone isn't in my sight, I have no idea when calls and notifications are coming in. Anyone?

The problem is caused by phone app. Each and every time I make a call, then the media volume goes mute. I installed an app (volume fixer) from the play store but it's really frustrating to use the app every time after the call.

It's undoubtedly caused when making a call. Any permanent solution?
