Welcome to Android Central! When you're on a call, notifications from other apps should only sound like a brief tone in the call -- it won't play over the main speaker. Are you saying that when you're listening to the person on the call and you get a text message, you don't hear any notification over the earpiece speaker at all?
Which phone or device you having this issue on?
You use DND ?(Do Not Disturb)That is correct except only SMS messages have this brief tone, other notifications from WhatsApp, Facebook, Gmail etc do not.
This is on an LG V30+ (LG-H930DS) Australian model.

Maybe apps still follow DND rules, try reset app preferences in settings and test again.Only at night I use DND, not during calls.

Try safe mode if still a issue
In the Phone app, is there a settings for Call Alerts? If so, look for a Notify During Calls option and turn that off.
Not that I can think of. Any phone I've used has performed like this, with only text messages able to play a sound during a call. For text messages, it's an option I can set in the text app. I don't use sounds for other notifications, but I also don't recall seeing notification sound during calls as an option in other apps I've used.@Mooncatt, you have experience with LG phones -- do you recall any settings we're missing?
