No Security when straight to Landscape

I just got the shift and when I set up the security to have a pattern to unlock the phone it only locks when you turn on the phone in vertical position. When you open the keyboard directly in landscape there is no pattern needed to unlock the phone it just goes right to the home screen. Is there a way around this? I need the security because of emails being accessible and what not.

Sorry if this is a common issue. I tried searching the forums for it.

How are you "testing" this? The default time is 5 minutes before it locks... even if you power down the screen. Thus if you expected to test your lock just by powering down and then sliding open the keyboard, it would not work unless you select "immediatly" under the lock settings

Mine is working properly no matter the method the phone is woke up

Just tested and mine is working fine.

I have changed my setting to 15 minutes, so to run this test I let my phone sit for about 20. I then opened up my keyboard without hitting the power button or anything else and was greeted to the 3x3 pattern screen in landscape. I then closed the keyboard and tapped the power button to put the screen back to sleep.

I then proceeded to try several different combination of turning the screen on, sliding the keyboard open and closed, and hitting the power button in both portrait and landscape....phone was locked every time.

I think Tomeygun is right. You phone might not have gone into secure mode before you open the keyboard.

I had it set for ten minutes. I waited twenty and slid out the keyboard right away and there was no pattern. I had the setting put to immediately and that actually worked. However when using any other setting and waiting at least twice the allotted time the pattern does not show up when sliding the keyboard directly out. It always works in portrait mode when pressing the power button. Trust me I'm not going crazy haha. Its really weird.

No problems here.

I can't seem to duplicate. If my screen is off and I set to landscape, when I open the slider I am prompted for my unlock pattern.

Let me know more and how I can help.

Matt,

This is my exact problem:

1. When the phone is set to lock immediately no matter what orientation i open it in (power button in portrait, power button in landscape, straight slide of the keyboard) I am prompted with the pattern to unlock it.

2. When its lock time is set at any other time it will open straight to the home screen when sliding open the keyboard and will not prompt me for the pattern code.

For example: When I have it set to lock after ten minutes I wait 20 minutes and in portrait mode press the power button and am prompted with the pass code. However, I turn the screen off, wait another 20 minutes, and slide the keyboard directly open and am not prompted with any pass code. It just goes to the home screen right away.

I am not sure how else to explain it. It seems like it is only happening to me.

Thanks,
Taylor

I'm getting the same thing.
As long as it is set to lock immediately I get the password/pattern to unlock. If there is any delay time before locking I get no security when sliding the keyboard to open my phone. It is the same with pin, password and pattern.

Confirmed: 5-minute PIN lock isn't secure if the keyboard is opened first, without touching the power button.

That's unacceptable (from the Exchange administrator point of view...).

Edit: I suppose it's possible that an app is involved in this; I didn't test immediately.

Confirmed on my evo shift as well.

When I push the button on the top of my phone to shut off the screen and I wait over 10 minutes(my time to lock is 10 minutes), then I open the keyboard I get the lock screen.

If I let my phone timeout and shut the screen off on its own, then wait over 10 minutes. I get no lock screen when opening the keyboard.

After a little testing this weekend I found this to be true as well.

If at any time I hit the power button (either to put to sleep or wake up) the security works as intended. But if I allow the phone to put itself to sleep and then after the time set for the security to become active passes I open the keyboard without hitting the power button first, I get right into the phone. I am not prompted to enter my pattern and the home screen come up in landscape form. I first tested at 15 minutes (what I use) and then again at 10...both had the same result.

It appears to me to be tied to the using the power button, is that what other are seeing as well?

I was/am having this issue as well and reported it to HTC. Surprise ... they recommend a factory reset. Here is the response:

I understand how important it is to make sure that the PIN successfully locks other out of your Sprint EVO Shift 4G. I was unable to replicate this issue on a test device with a PIN, pattern, or password. You will need to perform a factory reset on your device. Please Note: A factory reset will delete all personal information and restore the device back to factory default settings. You can perform a factory reset by going to Home > Menu > Settings > SD Card & Phone Storage > Factory Data Reset. Attempt to test this again by waiting at least 5 minutes after the initial 3 that you have set and open the keyboard again.

If the problem persists, please reply and I will be happy to assist you further.

Spent a fair bit of time testing this last week.

On both EVO Shifts I have available, if the inactivity timer is set to 3 or 5 minutes and the device is opened before 10 minutes (from the time the screen is turned off) have elapsed, the lock screen will not display. After ten minutes (using the countdown timer on my EVO) the lock engages and the password screen is displayed.

For the Immediately, 10 or 15 minute options, the lock engaged correctly after the preset amount of time elapsed.

This was replicated on both devices multiple times.

Mine is set to 10 minutes and doesn't require a PIN if I open the keyboard. So far, Immediately is the only one that really seems secure.

Strange, from the time the screen was turned off, all the settings other than the 3 or 5 minutes worked like clockwork on the two devices I was experimenting with. Those two kicked in once the screen was off for ten minutes, time and time again.
