No Sim Card error

This is not my phone and I'm not trying to open up a can of worms. One of my friends and his wife both just upgraded to the Pixel 3XL. They keep getting a no Sim card notification at the top of their screens or a no service notification. They'll have full service at the time as well. The only thing that fixes it is a restart. They have both had their SIM cards changed and phones replaced and the issue persists. I was trying to see if maybe anyone has any insight or if anyone else has had a similar issue.

What carrier are they on? If they're on Google Fi, that should be an eSIM, so it'd theoretically be possible for them to have service through Google Fi, and a nonfunctional physical SIM card from another carrier inserted.

With the eSIM selected, the phone doesn't tell you that there's no SIM card, even if there's no physical card inserted, If they're constantly giving that message, I'd call customer service soon enough to possibly get new phones as replacements.

I believe verizon.

They have already had them replaced once.

I'm having this issue, too. I found a Reddit thread that made it sound like this was pretty common for the Pixel 3XL. I don't have to restart the phone to fix it - it usually fixes itself after about 10 seconds - but it's highly annoying if I'm in the middle of reading a webpage and suddenly it loses connection.

I have Project Fi, and I'm using the SIM card from my Pixel XL. It seems like one way to fix this would be to switch to Project Fi's eSIM, but I can't find any information on how to do this after you've already set up the phone. Is there a way, or am I going to have to factory reset my phone to get the option of setting up eSIM?
