No SMS notification when phone is being used

Occasionally, I will been expecting a prompt response via text from one of my contacts (1-2 minutes). During this time I will typically use the phone for something else while waiting for the new SMS notification. Often times, I think I'm not getting a response, and go to my home screen to find a little "1" on my text icon. I open it, and sure enough there sits a message I received 5 minutes ago! Typically I will be browsing the web in Chrome, so I'm not in a full screen app that might make notifications invisible. Has anyone had this happen?

I am quite glad that I do not get notifications durying calls. That was one of my biggest peeves with the iPhone. At least with my BlackBerry there was a vibration while in a call.

This is an occasional problem even when I'm not in a phone call. I wouldn't care for notification sounds when I've got my ear up to the phone anyway but that's not the issue here.
