No tones in SMS messages

Anyone else have this issue.
From time to time when I start to get involded in a conversation, sometimes there is no tone stating a new message. The message is just there. My notifications are on and i checked into this but dont know where else to look. Anyone have this issue or know where to begin to look.?

Are you talking about if you have the message thread open, it doesn't give you a tone when a new message comes in? That's the only time I've noticed this, but it wasn't a problem because I noticed it come in as I was reading the previous message...

First,,,,are you using stock messaging or and addon app like handcent.....if stock then I'd recheck the setting inside the messaging app itself and the setting within the phone....if its an addon then you'll need to sillent the stock to make the addon primary...they could be cancelling each other out

Yes I am using a Zedge, but how do I silence the stock yet keeping the zedge active.. your feedback would be appreciated.

I think he is talking about going into settings>sound>messaging and putting it on silent, then opening the messaging app, hit the menu button, and going into settings and turning alerts on. At least that's what I got out of it.
