I was one of those who staunchly made and stood by that argument, and still believe it would have remained valid for most had they retained that benefit. Shame it's ended, as you're right - 64GB, while still fine for many, is appropriate for far, far fewer people now (as most people have the majority of their on-device storage taken up with captured media).

I would otherwise have seriously considered upgrading from the 3XL once the promotions invariably start hitting in about a month... (or I might have sooner, had they not again put out insulting trade-in values on their own products).

Ok, so I just went to Google's site, and yes, they indicate only unlimited free "high quality" backup and storage.

But that article didn't dig very deeply. Take a look at how Google defines "high quality":



Given that the highest resolution capture it will do for stills is 16MP (telephoto) or 12.2MP (standard), am I correct in reading this as meaning that photos taken with the Pixel 4 will, in fact, be stored in original resolution?

Now the video, that's a totally different story, as 4k video will certainly be downsized, but for stills it would appear to be like changing the speed limit on the autobahn from unlimited to 500mph - a total non-issue.

Edit - just reread with the interpretation that it will compress, whatever the resolution, while additionally resizing should photos be at higher res.

I've run a few tests of "High Quality" vs. original resolution and there was no visible difference that I could see, even under extreme magnification. Yes, the file size shrinks using High Quality, but whatever Google is doing to reduce file size is near magic.

They killed my interest with this. It's one of the major reasons I was sticking to Pixel devices. I'll stick around with my Pixel 3 until it dies on me.

The biggest and most important difference is no more 4k videos will be stored. 1080p vs 4k is a huge difference in quality, and the 4k files take up so much space on your phone, its nice to have a free place to store them online in original quality.

Hahaha, they just made it a lot easier to stick with my Note 10+ taking away one of the things I loved most about my pixel 3 XL and that's free unlimited full resolution storage.
