I'm guessing Verizon has "given up" on updating the LG G2 phone since its last update on November 3rd 2013 (stage fright update)...

Yes, but security updates won't hurt the phone. Verizon and LG want people to move on to newer phones but the older crowd still needs security updates for their phones.
