no voicemail notification?!?

I'm using the phone service app that came with the phone. From what I can tell there is not a notification for voicemail messages. How can this be?!? From what I remember there isn't even an icon on the lockscreen (although there is for a missed call).

What are other people doing to solve this problem? Is there an alternative phone app?

One other annoying thing: On the iPhone4 I was used to not having to call a voicemail number to pick up the message. However, this seems to be the way it needs to be done on the ATT S2. I would like it if the message lived in the phone, not somewhere in the network.

Google voice, problem solved. Also gives you transcripts of the VM messages (not always accurate, but close enough). Don't act on them till you hear the message for yourself. I got one from a buddy and what was somehow transcribed was having me do something on his wife. It was a let down for sure when I heard it.
