Noise canceling when in call with somebody - not phone call

I just got this phone two days ago and I've noticed that when I'm in a call on Skype or Hangouts that the incoming audio gets muted every time I speak or when on medium to low volumes. It's become really bothersome because I can't tell whether I'm in call anymore unless the other person speaks. Is there any way to turn this off? The noise suppression and voice clarity options have no affect on this at all. I'm using headphones when in call. Also I should note that this doesn't happen on my old broken phone so it must be something to do with the G4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any chance you are covering the mic with one hand, as it is on the bottom edge of the phone?
